The FBI has warned of a recent surge in activity by a group of scammers known as "phantom hackers." The scammers target older adults, often posing as tech support staff, bank employees, or government officials. They claim that the victim's financial accounts have been infiltrated by foreign hackers and that they need to take immediate action to protect their assets. The FBI has received over 19,000 complaints about the phantom hacker scam in the first half of 2023, with estimated losses totaling over $542 million.

This is actually a very popular way of scamming people especially the older ones who are more susceptible with the trick as they are less tech-savvy compared to the younger generation. One big lesson is never trusting anyone who called you for anything most especially related to your finances because these days legit firms are not usually calling their customers. For people who can be interested with this scam, one can watch many videos in YouTube to gain more insights and there are also many funny ones where the scammers are the ones victimized...turning the table around, so to speak.
