posts with expiration date

this forum has already had many discussions in the past and some topics from before are still applicable to this day however up to until what point is it still acceptable to bump up a thread? if a post has no new comments for like 4 years already should you still be really replying to that? especially if you really have nothing new to offer anyway

i feel like if there’s an update regarding that topic then just create a new post of your own

I think if we will bump a post that has not been discussed for like 4 years then it's not a good idea to post on it just make a new thread to start another discussion if it is that important otherwise the person can get the necrobumping tag, which I think is not a good thing because this tag is listed on the thread named as suspicious membership tags (source)

If we have nothing new to offer, then we should really not even think about it and then we also not think about creating a new thread because if we don't have to add anything new then what's the point in starting a discussion again that has been already discussed 4 years ago.

thank you for sharing this post lol it is good to remind some users that while activity is encouraged let us try to contribute something of use and something special topics that are no longer relevant should be left alone most of the time it just increases confusion when it’s bumped imagine reading something from a few years ago that is no longer applicable today but someone bumped that post making someone think that the post is happening again currently

If we have nothing new to offer, then we should really not even think about it and then we also not think about creating a new thread because if we don't have to add anything new then what's the point in starting a discussion again that has been already discussed 4 years ago.

i get that maybe some users want to keep talking about a specific topic but sometimes there is just nothing any more to say all you can do is read the thread and either start a new thread to interact with others or wait for anyone to start one

In most cases it will be an unwelcome necrobumping and can lead to getting a necrobuming badge.

Very rare it can have sense if there is, for instance, an ANN topic of some project and some important news of it someone wants to share. Even if there were no many interested in that for long it can sometimes be okay. And even if there is a good topic you want to try to reanimate... if you really think that this topic is better than making a new one. But better to to necrobump if not necessary.

I believe there has been a similar discussion in the past. I remember reading that technically the limit for bumping topics is within 120 days since we'll get a notification if we want to bump the topic with a new post after that. Posting after that day can be considered a necrobump, especially if it's been one year or more. Do you suggest we make a new rule to prevent this? I believe reporting their post to the moderator can be a decent solution if someone keeps doing that regularly.

If you fail to complete the minimum signature campaign or for any reason not related to the nature of the discussions, you will most likely get - Karma, and if you do it again, you will get a badge, so there is a big warning that appears to you before creating a response, and it is better to think several times before posting.

There are badges for everything you do and if you are someone who constantly necrobump irrelevant old topics will lead to negative karma, tag and badge which all might look bad on your profile. Sometimes random newbies just bump those for no reason while every other person will simply follow that in that case we should report the topic to be closed and also deleting the replies made afterwards.

Necrobumps can be very useful too. They aren't useless by nature.

Sometimes a news shows up and it is interesting to bump an old topic like "hey , look at what we thought in the past", on some correlated news.

No problem I'm happy to be of some help and yeah, we should leave the topics which are of not worthy to be discussed now. If we are without any logic posting we will get a necrobumper tag and might get other tags as well so its better to follow the current trend.

They should not keep talking about such topics and I don't see such cases now but we saw such cases when we were new to this forum and members posted on old topics which were old, like 1 to 3 years old, (including me I posted on some posts only) but now we are creating new topics on daily basis and that has decreased the spam tag.

if you have nothing new to add to update interested users why reply to such thread. unless you wanna insert a link like a sneaky spammer you really would need to reply to eventually make that post with a link.

but if ts best to just create a new thread for this the kind of update you want to post. its free to create one, no one still you from doing it and your post will definitely be read since most user will go to the first page to see what your thread is about in the first place.

warnings do not prevent people from doing it still well i don’t think it’s necessary to still impose a new rule it might feel too strict already but i hope that members of the forum become a bit more aware i have seen posts bumped but since their reply has no real contribution there’s no new discussion following it

Warnings are used to prompt the user to correct a minor error that does not incur a penalty. Receiving multiple notices for the same (or similar) reason can be the beginning of the end for an account, as users of this type often do not pay attention to the warnings or their meaning. Talking about something that is related to a thread from 4 years ago is not a problem as long as it has a direct relationship, but not, for example, talking about the value of Ethereum from 4 years ago with that of today. I know what I just said may seem contradictory, but it is not.

Bumping any thread as long as it is not an annoying bump should not be much of an issue. If a particular thread still serves it's purpose for those 4 years then bumping it is ok however if the thread becomes outdated it's of no use. If such a topic is supposed to be of great importance and value to the community then you can just proceed to recreate a new one to serve the same purpose especially in cases where the original authors of the thread are no longer active.

It's a nice idea to always update important posts that get outdated from time to time especially in the case of guides concerning softwares that undergo constant update. In such case updating and then bumping is ok .
