"500 transactions per second": Vitalik says Zk-Snarks can scale Ethereum

Buterin said that using Zk-snarks technology, one could potentially scale Ethereum "to a huge value of up to 500 transactions per second" without relying on second-tier scaling solutions like Plasma or Raiden.

The ZK-snarks algorithm allows you to compress large packets of information into so-called "compressed proofs" that remain the same regardless of the number of inputs.


Buterin wrote:
We can actually scale the transaction of transfer of assets on Ethereum on a huge amount by not using level 2, which introduce assumptions about the survivability (e.g., channels, plasma) using a zk-SNARK for mass confirmation of the transaction.

Continuing, Buterin describes a method that involves a "relay" node, a kind of computer that performs the task of aggregating transactions in exchange for transaction fees.

"Anyone can be a relayer, there is no assumption about the existence of an unreliable special operator," Buterin added.

As a result, the Creator of Ethereum appreciated that this configuration can achieve "~ 24x for transactions and ETH ~ 50x for transmission ERC20".

The proposal came at a time when pressure on Ethereum researchers is growing, in an attempt to find ways to scale the platform.

Although aggregation of transactions with zk-snarks is computationally intensive, the technology is likely to improve in the future. I understand that the above requires some fairly complex computational work on the part of the repeaters. Buterin is not the first developer to assume that adapting Zcash technology to the Etherium can make the protocol of the latter more reliable. In early 2017, the CSC reported that a group consisting of researchers from both organizations launched a project of "alchemy" - an initiative to add zero-knowledge of the evidence of the Etherium to help anonymize the protocol, with a special glance at what clever application contracts, such as e-voting can be performed transparently, without compromising user privacy.
