The American Shipper portal, a publication with specialized information on international transport and logistics, reported that the United States Customs and Border Protection Service (CBP) plans to test blockchain technology to verify certificates in its trade agreements. . The announcement was made during the CBP 2018 Commercial Symposium held in Atlanta.

During the event, which took place on August 14 and 15, CBP said that it will carry out "fire tests" in September to verify the certificates of origin of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA, for its acronym in Spanish). English) and the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA, for its acronym in English). NAFTA involves the United States, Mexico and Canada, while CAFTA involves the United States, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic.

Vincent Annunziato, director of CBP's Division of Transformation and Business Innovation, said that with this test, the government has a double intention. The first "is to help blockchain technology in a healthy way to increase market adoption" and the second would be to prepare them "proactively to be ready when private industry really starts to take off with this technology".

CBP hopes that the technology will allow it to obtain more accurate information about the products and goods imported and exported to the country, verifying if the suppliers comply with the treaty's norms. They also plan to take along with the Advisory Committee on Commercial Customs Operations (COAC) a blockchain with proof of concept to register intellectual property.
