I think it makes more sense to look at it as a decentralized global network just as someone mentioned above, if you say it’s owned and controlled by the government, it’ll give rise to lots of questions, like which government owns and controls it? I think the reason it looks like the government controls it is because they use their resources and governmental power and influence to access the internet’s data whenever they wish, which of course any other person can do if they possess the same resources, influence and power.
I completely agree with you. the Internet is not own by any single entity or government, it is a global network of interconnected operating systems that is designed for the purpose of international sharing of knowledge, ideas, communication, trade and so on.
I think some entities do have more power over the internet than even goverments.
For example, Google, Meta, TikTok, AWS, X.
Those companies own the infrastructure (cloud ), they own the traffic, they own what we watch in their apps, etc...
Internet is not owned by anyone, but certainly a few entities have some control over the internet.
