I have my own reasons for this, that is, it has to do with halving bitcoin. Obviously, when viewed from 2017, altcoin prices increase when bitcoin prices will touch new ath. So, because bitcoin halving 2020, many people already hold various kinds of the altcoin in large quantities.

I think years back cryptocurrency and alts is not actually  famous because were ignorance of it's existence as of that time some people don't really know what it is in that particular years. What actually make alts more famous now is that peoples eye has open to the opportunity that digital currency has to offer many adoption, is not like this few years back when alts came new.

Altcoins were not very well known until a few years ago as investors were less inclined towards them. Today, a lot of coins have come in the market and proved to be profitable, due to which the interest of people has increased in them.

In my view, people prefer to move on altcoins once Bitcoin price seems rather stable. In that situation, people will be hard to gain a big income from Bitcoin investment. While altcoins provide high volatility, it means a chance to have big profits. Although that also means a big risk of losing.

I think the most frequent reasons is the cryptocurrency are more popular today compare to the previous years, every year more and more people was entering into crypto-space and because Bitcoin was so expensive already that's why they ended up choosing altcoins as the alternative for Bitcoin and i think that's the very reason.
