How did you judge its failure or success? A project market cap is not exceeding the market cap of bitcoin doesn't mean it has failed. Btc hold most of the liquidity because its the very first crypto that ever build and people trust it. There are other altcoin that's price is lower than btc but its usecase is better than BTC and its rate of return is also higher in some points.

If bitcoin disappears for some reason, I see no reason why altcoins should also disappear. There will simply be a redistribution of influence in the cryptocurrency market and everything will work the same as before.
I see too much emphasis on the fact that the supply of bitcoin is capped at 21 million and that every four years there will be a halving of rewards to miners for their work.
