I don't like it, it's a waste of money and block space when they don't even know whether that defendant is US citizen or not. But at least they use OP_RETURN (rather than Ordinals) which is less bloaty for Bitcoin blockchain.

I did not expect the court to use OP_Return to notify the owner of the address of the importance of appearing for the lawsuit, but it is revolutionary. Will OP_Return be used in the future as a means of sending legal data to Bitcoin addresses that no one knows anything about?

I found this part of the article funny

However, not all agree on the validity of this procedure. Peter Todd, a Bitcoin Core developer, declared:
This is an awful way of serving someone. I don’t know of any wallets that display OP_Return info on incoming transactions.

Some block explorers show OP_Return value and therefore do not require wallets to see such messages.

Bitcoin node only broadcast transaction with single OP_RETURN which has size 80 bytes or less. So if that happens, i think they'll include download link instead.

Some block explorers show OP_Return value and therefore do not require wallets to see such messages.

But unless people have habit of checking their address using explorer rather than opening their wallet  (whether watch-only wallet or wallet which contain pirvate key), they wouldn't realize one of their transaction has OP_RETURN.

This is really shocking and unique way to tell the hacker about the case I mean why would the hacker give a shit about the case if the court or authorities only know his wallet address then what fear hacker have plus they also spend 100$ + fee too to send a pdf link to the hacker. And there is still a possibility that once the hacker gets caught he would say that he did not see the link in the OP_RETURN.

I mean, this data is not directly shown in some wallet, to see this we have to use explorers. In my opinion, it's a waste of money and resources, they are just finding ways to give some relaxation to the victim who lost $100k that we are doing something.

What a waste of money and time, there is still a possibility that the hacker would have missed to see that information, but I guess he/she might not have because this news shared by BTC.com might have reached to that hacker so that hacker now knew about the case but what effect this news would have on that hacker. That hacker must have get the point that he is not under any danger as if the authorities would have knew his location then they would not send him the case like this.

By the way its a good source of information, they should have provide the transaction detail so we should also check if they really did it or not, if they already shared it then that's another thing. I am happy on the fact that they did not inscribed any thing via ordinals on BTC blockchain to convey the message.
