Nigeria is on a reverse gear aimlessly without direction. The federal government blackmailed NLC to agreeing for ₦70k and addressing the economic issues but upon approval, the economy became worse to say. Currently a litre of fuel is #1350, transportation is on the high side, food items on the rise and every thing is virtually inflating. Is it that the government economic team has nothing to profer to this economic crises.

It is very disappointing that Nigeria cannot refine product but depends on foreign refinery for products when Nigeria is a commercial quantity producers. It is a shame that things has gone worse than we least expected it to. What a country.

Very disappointed at NLC. I think the price of fuel at that time of new minimum wage agreement was about N800. And now, the price has increased to N1300-1400, depending on location. I keep saying it, NLC settled for less by allowing the federal government decide for them. They literally have no idea of the level of power that they have. They can decide to shut down the activities of the country, which will definitely force the government to grant their demands. This is why it is very important to have good heads, who are leaders of an association or organization.

As for the refinery, well, I think the government clearly knows the benefits of owning a refinery but choose not to do it. Instead, they are making boast of Dangote's private owned refinery. It's clearly a shame on their part. The current administration came in and decide to remove fuel subsidy, but we haven't even seen the advantage of doing that. They just take certain actions and decisions that will affect millions of people that lives in the country.

The NLC failed to understand the calibers of people in the federal executive council alongside the president. These men are not human being and have no conscience, the wailing of the masses does not concern them and only what can shake them is a decisive resolution that would waken them up and the NLC was just cajoled by mere words to reach an agreement with them thinking that they would honor their own path of the agreement. NLC died long ago after Adams Oshiomhole left them and the current NLC leader can not do more than this he has done as there is an agreement  binding them now.

Minimum wage increase or decrease I think that might not even help our country. However it might have immediate help but can't keep up with the beautiful future. That means it will leave nija in more hell in time.
Our naira go survive at all?
Look this queries
Is it easy to make 50,000 dollars monthly for develop countries?
I think you Sabi the answer?
That means minimum wage increase is not the problem.

Industrialization is the way forward to renforcement of our economy.
good governance and good followership don die for we 9ja. That will cure our naira. And these issues of minimum wage go disappear.

Very correct, whether it is decreased or increased it would bring about no significant change in the country right now, I consider it to be a temporary solution, The Nigerian government always tries to come up with unhelpful solutions. If the price of fuel is still at one thousand naira per litre what would the average man do with seventy thousand naira a month when the cost of transportation is high and also the price of food items too that's sky rocketing on a daily basis. The president and leaders have no plans for the masses of this country, survival which was easy has become very difficult. Instead of trying to increase the minimum wage the inflation should be worked on and also jobs should be provided

Minimum wage in Nigeria it can lead to job loss, as the employers can afford to pay workers high wages. It can lead businesses to move overseas, where labour cost are cheap. Some people argue about the high minimum wage that it can lead to inflation, as the business may pass the cost of higher wages to consumers in form of high price. Additional higher minimum wage can help to reduce poverty and improve standard living. The main concern about minimum wage it causes job loss, as the employer's may not be able to afford to pay their worker's.Do you think these concerns will bring benefits of the minimum wage?

When the economy can no longer sustainable favourable to worker, minimum wage is been introduced to causion the economic effect to workers, inflation is not only caused by high minimum wage, it is mainly triggered when nation consume morethan they produce, in the time we are in, it has become very impossible for nations to do without the minimum wage because both private and government workers can no longer afford the necessities, if the economy is in its right state, increasing the minimum wage would have been a long interval stuff, lets not forget that without the minimum wage, there would have been a problem for workers, is just that there is job deficit in Africa, the work force is nothing to right home about, I agree with you that additional minimum wage may cause more job loss because the sector may not be able to carter for the cost of a large workforce but in the developed world minimum is seen as a priority of the  government and the private sector to upgrade the standard of living of their workers in other to adapt to the present days economic  realities

I will agree with you that minimum wage is neither the problem of our country but rather to make sure the average workers be able to afford a meaningful life and still yet, the minimum wage is not enough for the average worker. If so what will you talk about the occurrence immediately after the approval of the minimum wage for the workers, the prices of goods and services skyrocket to the highest ever since the inception of democracy and this current government.

Sometimes I wonder what if we really have leaders in the country. A nation well endowed with natural resources in commercial quantity that should not be lacking anything basic amenities, job, financial freedom and everything you could think of that makes life comfortable. Yet there is still economic crisis in the land, and the economic council inaugurated by the president can not do anything about it. I was discussing with my friend the other day and he said this that Nigeria should be amongst the first 10 countries to be talked about in terms of a well to do economy but the opposite is the case as a result of the corrupt practices of our leaders. It is quite unfortunate we found ourselves in this condition at the moment.

All we just need now is industrialization and human capacity development, revival of all production sectors, establishment of factories which would create employment and lastly, the consumption of locally produced goods should be encouraged so as to stabilize the naira value removing the weight on excessive importation of goods and services. Exportation of our locally produced goods be encouraged to give a good boost to our economy and add value to our currency.

« Reply #20 on: September 26, 2024, 06:42:19 PM »
This issue of minimum wage got me thinking so much that I began to wonder if the government really mean well for her citizens or what? First thing first, the economy of the nation is on a free fall that it needs intervention. Addressing the economy should be the utmost priority of the government because even after implementing the minimum wage and the economy is still getting worse, then it is of no value implementing the minimum wage because the situation would get worse than it was which is currently happening.

Currently, it is as if  it doubled times two to having a down tone on the masses which the minimum wage itself can not be able to sustain the average worker. The NLC itself made a big mistake accepting to sign such agreement with the federal government knowing fully well how they could be most times. Now it seems as if they heard about the minimum wage and have decided to double the cost of living that the minimum wage would be of no value.

Necessary economic policy should be implemented and agencies for food price control should be ordered to carrying out their task and be void of corrupt practices. Only then would the economy and price of food stuffs be okay and affordable.

Good point, even if the minimum wage is doubled with the rate of inflation in the country it's as good as nothing, people that have cars don't drive as much because the price of petrol Is something else. How do you expect people to go to work everyday with the high level of transportation fare, even if the minimum wage is increased do you think they can keep paying such a high amount of transport everyday coupled with the fact that they also have other expenses to take care of. The Cost of living is extremely high and even if the minimum wage is tripled it might not even solve the recession and poverty in the country, the Nigerian government has failed it's people, the president obviously has no plan to make this country great. What is the next step take as Nigerians? Is leaving the country the only solution?

If every body decides to leave the country, who would then make it a better place? Nigeria needs us to make it a better place and it starts with us correcting the wrongs, calling the government to order, making sure everything is accounted for in the society. Till we stop singing the praises of politicians,  they can never do well because the praise we sing for them makes them corrupt more thinking they are doing well by embezzling the more funds and resources.

Minimum wage isn't the way to alleviate poverty right now in Nigeria, doing that only is the same thing as going round in circles because it's not going to make any significant change. The cost of things must be reduced before thinking about increasing the minimum wage. Right now in Nigeria what an average household spends in a week is more than that wage they are increasing it to, the inflation is the main thing that should be tackled

According to the statement released by the NLC chairman he claimed that the president had betrayed them - he said the federal government agreed on their demand and increased the minimum wage of government workers but then made the situation of the whole country even more difficult for them and the effect of the increased salary cannot even be felt due to the increased inflation in the country.

There are so many things that need to be worked on first before increasing the salary of workers because if they just do it I’ll will just be like them watery a dead plant and expecting the most bountiful harvest from it.

That's a good point, Nigeria has a lot of things that should be worked on and increasing the minimum wage right now isn't going to fix. If the inflation issue is not dealt with then it would be pointless for the minimum wage to be increased because people would not still be able to afford some certain things they need. The government don't have a plan for the citizens of this country relying on them is a big risk that anyone can ever take, the system of government has failed it's citizens.

The main concern about minimum wage it causes job loss, as the employer's may not be able to afford to pay their worker's.
Many employees will prefer not to be paid the minimum wage than to lose their jobs because if they lose their jobs, there is no assurance that they will get another job outside anytime soon. Employers know this, and the wicked ones who have no intention to honor the new minimum wage will give the option to the employees to either agree to continue receiving the normal salary or lose their job. Of course we know the answer already.

What I think would be the situation at the end of the day is many people working and not receiving the minimum wage even though the government has passed it into law. Employers cannot afford to pay and employees cannot afford to lose their job.

What I think would be the situation at the end of the day is many people working and not receiving the minimum wage even though the government has passed it into law. Employers cannot afford to pay and employees cannot afford to lose their job.

This shows the level of corruption and wickedness that has eaten up the system. When the new minimum wage was signed into law, it was expected of every government worker Including corpers as well, to receive because they all work for the government. I've heard of some cases of some state government who refused earlier to pay the new minimum wage, meanwhile they are receiving a living wage.

Like I will keep saying, NLC is to be blame for the mess that the country has gotten into. The price of petrol has jokingly entered 1200-1300(depending on where you live), but the NLC just keep pretending as if they don't live in the country. They literally don't know the power they have in making decisions for the country.

« Reply #26 on: October 05, 2024, 07:43:11 AM »
You are on point, increasing the minimum wage when the prices of goods are still on the high rise is absolutely ridiculous, if the minimum wage is finally increased to 70 thousand naira how much is a bag of rice or other things in the market right now? Looking at this critically you would see that the minimum wage has no value because things are extremely expensive, the average man can't provide for himself comfortably in this economy
Any talks about minimum wage increase are just presented to convince public that they're getting more Naira now from government, and old age thinkers believe that's a good thing to have higher minimum wage but to be honest, minimum wage increase can't really solve the issues that come with higher prices of things.

The minimum wage increase can convince some people but when inflation is higher than it won't really have real impact on the economy. I believe a better remedy should be to control inflation rather than increasing minimum wage because when cost of things go down then even without increasing minimum wage one can afford those things easily.

The government don't have a plan for the citizens of this country relying on them is a big risk that anyone can ever take, the system of government has failed it's citizens.

The thingg is that some people still haven’t realized that they are so many options and opportunities out there for them - they think that once they leave this job that pays mini wage they won’t get anyone again due to the duration that they have been working in that position.
Well, getting a job in Nigeria is difficult, and that is a fact, this is why who ever has one, will try as much as possible to maintain it, especially those who have no other means if livelihood, or any thing else to fall back to incase they either lose that job or quit from it.

But again on the other hand, many are also perishing due to lack of knowledge, now lack of knowledge of what they want, but lack of knowledge of how to get that which they want, but I won't blame them to be honest, because where ever a man finds himself that is good is by grace.

Aside being a salary earner, there are alot of things one can do to make money in Nigeria, but the majority of people do not know, while most are also scared of leaving their comfort zone to try new things.

The problems with most Nigerians is the lack of courage to trying out new things. They just have this phobia of failing, but forgetting that we can't get any result if we don't even make an attempt. Just as you've said, they are several ways to making money (especially via the internet that has become very common), but getting all these information requires something most times. We sometimes need to pay a price. A trader once told me that it's possible for someone to learn trading using YouTube or other means, but we can't compare them with those who paid a price(funds).

Re: What do you think about the minimum wage?
« Reply #29 on: October 11, 2024, 10:31:22 PM »

Concerning this, is there no law that punishes those that fails to pay their workers up to the minimum wage? What you said is true, some might not want to honor this new law and because of the fear of being stranded most of the workers in the company will still stay, I think the government so set up an agency that run a check across all companies that is fit enough to pay the minimum wage and let that start paying their workers that and if they decide to pay more than that it shouldn’t be anyone’s business as long as the workers are not underpaid.
