For traders they prefer short term because that is where good profits came from given that they are more knowledgeable on that field but for investors who has no in depth knowledge about fundamentals and technical analysis they prefer long term hodling and that is also stress proof as you just leave it on your wallet until the estimated time of taking profit. I still read the latest news, because besides holding for the long term I also do daily trading. so I need updated news that will affect the crypto market.
