Ethereum's popularity was contributed a lot by ICO trend in 2017. And those ICOs chose Ethereum for of its smart contract. Smart contract but nothing else is what makes ETH "blockchain 2.0". These days, a lot of projects acclaim themselves blockchain 3.0 or blockchain 4.0 but I don't see anything as innovative as ETH's smart contract yet.
