There are some cryptocurrencies without ICOs but have really high price such as Ontology. I think it's all based on its technology and how large is the community who support the project.

I think that if a project is very good and team has the knowledge to attract big investors with private sale ICO is not needed, otherwise ICO is essential for success of a project because otherwise it's difficult to reach a decent amount of money to develop roadmap

As for me, I think that the only difference which is really important - is their difference in security. Their grows is obtained only by customers.

The main purpose of an ICO is to obtain money in order to start a project. If the project can be launched even without any start up capital, then there is no difference between that coin and those who do ICO.
