20 days ago, Tornado Cash developer Alexey Pertsev has been found guilty of laundering $1.2 billion. It's a bit crazy to punish a developer for developing the code.
Now Vitalik Buterin got involved with a donation (I guess he won't be accused either). I wonder if, by including more influential names, the pressure on all actors participating in the development of anonymization can be alleviated a little.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin donated 30 ETH, valued at around $113,000, to support the legal defense of Tornado Cash developers Alexey Pertsev and Roman Storm through the decentralized fundraising platform Juicebox.

I am sure that this donation coming from no less than Vitalik Buterin - one of the most famous crypto figures around - can go a long way towards helping for the defense of Alexey Pertsev so he can be given his fair share in court and hopefully can be able to escape the lawfare launched by the government against many personalities involved in cryptocurrency industry and technology in the name of violating the money laundering law. Now, Buterin for sure is acknowledging that this is going to be a very important case as this can surely redefine many things related to decentralization and has the big potential to limit innovations and growth of the industry. Aside from funds, I am hoping that the crypto industry can have one voice on this matter and there can be a hub to get involved with legal matters so the government can be checked and not allowed to abuses its state power over anyone in the crypto industry.

That's not the first time they have gone after the developer of the program, they have done worse i.e going after the developer of Silk Road's developer Ross. They have punished him more than the expected punishment. I don't know what has changed now that they are not punishing to the same extent now. I think their minds have been changed now. With time laws modify themselves.
Well, besides the loopholes in laws, I will say, that 30 ETH is not a small step, a few days ago I replied on a thread that was Bitcoin Fund Saving scheme website posted here on "News related to Crypto". I am unable to find the link to that thread now, but that website is run by some people who have lawyers with them, and if people would donate them they will fight the first case of Tornado Cash devs. I hope you might have heard about that site as well. BTW I did not know about juice boxes as well, I wonder how many fundraising platforms would be there for such donations.

Oh, man. ??? Did you use an AI text generator for this post?
Friendly advice, you should seriously think about the way you write and approach the forum in general. Pointless writing to meet the signature quota is one of the reasons why companies give up promotion through signature campaigns.
I assume, at some point, the manager will look at the quality of the posts, and you will very easily lose your slot because the competition for a place in the campaign is high.

A similar fund has already been created--> Bitcoin Policy Institute Launches Fund To Protect Non-Custodial Tools (https://www.altcoinstalks.com/Bitcoin Policy Institute Launches Fund To Protect Non-Custodial Tools)
It seems that the battle over privacy will head to the courts, and I truly hope that it will be the end of random accusations of money laundering, but I personally prefer to put pressure on decision-makers more than defending those accused in such cases.

I also thought about Ross for comparison. Probably the main difference in the verdict is how Ross actually tried to hide his operation from the Government. I don't agree with the double life but from the the documentary I watched about how they were able to track him and his deep involvement with Silk Road, I can say he deserves longer prison time than Alex.
When it comes to donors like Vitalik, I doubt they will go after him.

A little more than $100k is realistically very little money when it comes to a case like this in which lawyers will cost a lot - so I think that Mr. V could have "worked harder" considering how much wealth he has amassed in the past 10 years. It is true that he did not have to give anything, but I always look at donations in the context of how much money someone has - and they say that he became a billionaire a few years ago.

What would 100k bills do in a case this large? I saw this in the news and was fuming as well. I mean, this is something a day trader can pull out without breaking the bank I've always told people that billionaires are the most selfish individuals on the planet; they treasure every penny in their pocket. Mr. Etheruem just want to be in the spotlight, nothing else.
Alexey Pertsev has been found guilty of various money laundering offences (36 illegal activities); what difference will the donation make now? And why is no one talking about the charges against Alexey Pertsev? Are we going to start donating money to criminal defence now to maintain privacy protocols?

I think there is a possibility to appeal the verdict. The whole process is expensive, so any donation is certainly welcome.
Since before, there has been a site to support Alexa https://www.freealex.nl/
Whatever his intention, it sounds much more authoritative when Vitalik Buterin gives support than examplens or Igebotz from Altcoinstalks

Alexey Pertsev is the developer only. It's worrying if you don't see developers being treated like criminals.
Do you know that Roman Storm Tornado Cash Co-Founder has reportedly pleaded ‘not guilty’ to money laundering and other charges?
Do you see anything illogical in the whole thing?

Tornado Cash represents anonymity in the crypto market, which can be important to many users but is a serious problem for governments. Vitalik Buterin's actions seem to be aimed at showing his support for freedom of speech: "code is not guilty, open source is a form of free speech that everyone deserves".
I think the US government does not like Vitalik's actions because he is very famous in this market, his actions could trigger stronger support from many others and make the handling of the Tornado Cash case more complicated. For me, the Tornado Cash Devs are not guilty because he only created a decentralized protocol. The same is true of a road builder who is not guilty when the road is abused by criminals.

Of course, the amount of 30 ETH is a very small amount for the creator of Ethereum, and it does not constitute a large number in a large case like this, which requires senior lawyers and may last a long time, but I expect that Vitalik Buterin aims to show his moral support for the case of Alexei Burtsev, developer of Tornado Cash.
The issue is primarily related to privacy, which is an issue that has and continues to raise a lot of controversy in the United States, and it is certain that there are many figures and associations interested in the issue, and this behavior of a famous figure like Vitalik Buterin will certainly help in gathering more of the necessary financial and moral support.

In any case he broke the rules + such donations are unlikely to help him in any way. Except for a lawyer, that's the maximum.
P.S. This is the reality - there is not and will not be anonymity online + decentralisation. If special services are interested in you = they will find you anywhere in the world (no matter where you are/how well you hide). Alas, but it's true. It's more a question of accepting reality and/or continuing to live within your own framework. ???

Decentralized App (which is what tornado cash really is) is an APP which cannot be stopped, cannot be censored. Although the front-end is banned from US and other countries and the developers arrested, it is still usable. Anyone with basic solidity/blockchain knowledge can still use it. This is the power of ethereum and the blockchain.
The problem is that the persons behind those apps can be censored and punished...

Fuck Mr V he still owes me two eth from when they rebuilt the blockchain years ago.
I hope he gets locked up for giving the 30 eth.

Or it could turn out to be a scam, there is no popular mixer for Ethereum and I still see many services hosting Tornado Cash as an alternative mixer.
Users' need for privacy will drive them directly to these scammers.

While Vitalik only donate 100k, don't forget that other people also make donation. When i write this reply, the donation address already receive 2239 ETH (about $4.8 million). And while it's possible he did that to be in spotlight, i expect it encourage few people to also make donation.

I'm more intrigued why people who work on such things don't try to remain anonymous? I guess these people should realize that what they do attracts a lot of attention, and mixing has been on the black list for years. In this way, the authorities want to send a clear message to everyone who will ever try something similar - and I hope that everyone who will work on something that enables privacy will first of all know how to protect their privacy.

It will be sad that all that money will be "eaten" by lawyers.
As everything looks now, there won't be much help for Alexey, but creating more publicity and providing resistance could soften the attitude of the authorities towards similar cases in the future.

They were under the assumption, "I'm not going to be caught"

eXch.cx exchange just f***** up Vitalik and donated 31ETH to this case. 8)
Our donations today:
31 ETH - Legal Defense Fund support for Tornado Cash developers Alexey Pertsev and Roman Storm (https://juicebox.money/@free-pertsev-and-storm, https://wewantjusticedao.org) - https://etherscan.io/tx/0x98bfc604c917ccc83d1a86b7af1542011a5aa54208dd110036e2c280a963a498
We believe that their legal team should consider highlighting the fact that crypto was never considered a financial instrument for many years in addition to being unregulated, which should automatically make any attempts to apply fiat-based anti-money laundering regulations to anyone working with crypto unlawful. Basing the defense line on historical facts where major central banks and governments refused to admit crypto as a financial instrument should bring positive results. FATF documentation contains lots of inaccuracies and their VASP-related guidance approaching crypto is highly immature. There is a lot of material to structuralize good defense.

That's likely, since i feel it's one of few cases where government want to keep such people in jail.

Clickbait media should publish news about this news :P. Anyway, the amount is surprising when i expect they're not as rich as Vitalik.

The idea was to create something as privacy enabling way for people, I don't think there is a need to hide when his intentions were clean, he was practically doing his thing to improve privacy and was used to laundered money as the government claimed and not like he did it intentionally, who will even want to do something that will land him in jail in the public.
The faith of Bitcoin mixers is now shifted to ethereum developers as well, this is to say that government don't like it the way transactions are hidden from them and they are helpless otherwise they might have ban crypto for long.

It's not a very smart assumption if you ask me - because all those who have anything to do with cryptocurrencies are subject to at least some supervision - and we know that the most powerful three letters agency were interested in it from the very beginning.
No matter what you think about the right to privacy, "they" have a completely different opinion, and when someone threatens you with prison because you want your privacy, then you have no choice but to live in the shadows and try to stay under the radar.
Clickbait media should publish news about this news :P. Anyway, the amount is surprising when i expect they're not as rich as Vitalik.
Those who have less always give more - and that's not the only donation they gave - if you look at the link from BTT, the people behind that project are quite generous considering that they certainly don't have a billion dollars or some similar amount in their account.

Read more about the case, and I can see why Alexey Pertsevis is receiving so much support from the crypto communities; it looks more like me being jailed for creating firearms for the public while the person who actually committed a murder with the gun was freed.
eXch.cx exchange just f***** up Vitalik and donated 31ETH to this case. 8)
Throw this money into signature promotion. Taking stick to a gun fight all for what? Public validation? Lol ;D
