That's not the first time they have gone after the developer of the program, they have done worse i.e going after the developer of  Silk Road's developer Ross. They have punished him more than the expected punishment. I don't know what has changed now that they are not punishing to the same extent now. I think their minds have been changed now. Well, besides the loopholes in laws, I will say, that 30 ETH is not a small step, a few days ago I replied on a thread that was Bitcoin Fund Saving scheme website posted here on "News related to Crypto". I am unable to find the link to that thread now, but that website is run by some people who have lawyers with them, and if people would donate them they will fight the first case of Tornado Cash devs. I hope you might have heard about that site as well. BTW I did not know about juice boxes as well, I wonder how many fundraising platforms would be there for such donations.

I also thought about Ross for comparison. Probably the main difference in the verdict is how Ross actually tried to hide his operation from the Government. I don't agree with the double life but from the the documentary I watched about how they were able to track him and his deep involvement with Silk Road, I can say he deserves longer prison time than Alex.

Tornado Cash represents anonymity in the crypto market, which can be important to many users but is a serious problem for governments. Vitalik Buterin's actions seem to be aimed at showing his support for freedom of speech: "code is not guilty, open source is a form of free speech that everyone deserves".

Decentralized App (which is what tornado cash really is) is an APP which cannot be stopped, cannot be censored. Although the front-end is banned from US and other countries and the developers arrested, it is still usable. Anyone with basic solidity/blockchain knowledge can still use it. This is the power of ethereum and the blockchain.

Or it could turn out to be a scam, there is no popular mixer for Ethereum and I still see many services hosting Tornado Cash as an alternative mixer.
Users' need for privacy will drive them directly to these scammers.
