I've seen Ngannou mentioned in the boxing boxing thread and googled for his next fight to discover it's only 10 days away from now. I almost forgot that Francis Ngannou exists, I've seen zero info on that fight in my feeds. Is it just me or is it massively under-hyped?
Anyhow, Francis is a big favourite, with x1.34 odds, while Ferreira is x3.25. I don't know much about Ferreira, but have seen some highlights of his fights, and think Ngannou could struggle. Not because Ferreira being that good, but because of Francis not having any MMA fight for almost 3 years now, and because of Ferreira's slight size advantage - he's taller and likely will be heavier.
How do you see that fight playing out?
Here's a short promo-video:
-
Yeah, it's been a while since I last saw any news from Francis. With how the fight goes, I don't think this will go past round 2 because it seems the other fighter is also a KO artist. Ferreira is probably the more technical fighter but Ngannou's style when swinging and looking for a KO is a bit odd. He might catch Renan off-guard with that unpredictability.
-
PFL didn't learn how to market fight like how UFC would. Ngannou is earning more in boxing than in his MMA fghts. Knocked out in his bout with AJ and his kid died, it seem Ngannou has closed his book to the public for some time too.
His PFL fight I think isn't his priority anymore but because his PFL contract allow him to fight in boxing, he still has no option but to abide.
-

I didn't even know. That's brutal. I read his so was only 15 months old.

I can't imagine it will go past 2 rounds unless one of them decides to stall by attempting takedowns or pushing the other one against the cage. I think it's all down to how well will Francis be prepared. If he shows up at his 100%, he should have no problem KOing Ferreira.
-
How do you see that fight playing out?
I expected Francis to win his last fight against Joshua; he ended up losing in a very disappointing manner after all the hype going down too easily. I will not expect much from him either in this fight since there is still financial gain in it if he loses.
I have never heard of the other fighter, but I will watch the fight for the sake of entertainment and keep an open mind about the two fighters without placing bets on either of them.
-
Yeah, we totally forget about Francis about that devastating knockout he suffered from AJ. And after that, he is back on MMA so it might be good for him to settle in this sports and not to do cross over anymore, although he made a lot of money already. With that, since majority of us here are not familiar with Renan and basing on the odds itself, I think Francis has a good chance to win and be big in the win column and also getting back his confidence in combat sports. But I'm not going to bet on this one, I'll just pass and just watch the highlights.
-
See how PFL is loosing battle to UFC. They have two huge guys to fight soon. Both are big stars and would attract great audience, but we rarely and barely see any fight promotion. As if PFL are using their resources (fighters) ineffectively.

He surely still will get a nice payout even if he loses, but losing in MMA in a match in which he's a big favourite would drive his "stocks" down and reduce earning potential for any following fights, so he should have a lot of motivation to win.
I can't really blame him for losing to AJ. He did exceptionally well against Fury, but expecting him to beat up every top boxer is just too much. It was a one-time surprise.
-
This is a very challenging fight for Ngannou He is fighting a guy who is making waves in the MMA heavyweight division and he is the defending champion in PFL. With his last loss via knockout against AJ he needs to show that he is still good by winning against Renan.
The match is pretty even to me, but I'm rooting for Ngannou to win the fight as he is the more experienced of the two having big names in the MMA world.

Hopefully he can utilize the boxing and footwork he learned from Mike. Winning this fight could give Francis another shot to boxing. It is still not late to make few fights in boxing and probably get to climb the competition again.
Ngannou is one of the fighter who figured out to fight back Dana and made it to what he wants to happen.

Funny thing is I read that the top guy in the PFL management came out saying Dana will try to do something to steal the limelight from Ngannou's upcoming fight. Well, he might have done something behind the scenes already but it still doesn't look good on the PFL guy to drag another promotion instead of focusing on their main event.

Dana becomes unhinge every time the discussion is about Ngannou, when a reported asks about Danas opinion about Ngannou, it always sounds very bitter.
Ngannou left UFC with a heavyweight champ belt, thats got to be something to bragg for and some UFC fighters can't do. And then Dana looked down on Ngannou because he thought Ngannou will fail to find an MMA contract somewhere that allows him to cross fight. But he made it.
This is why Ngannou becomes a perfect ambassador for PFL maybe with the purpose to annoy Dana.
-
The match is pretty even to me.
This particular reason makes this fight very unattractive for me to try to gamble on because I consider both fighters to be almost the same and that the fight can go in anybody's favor. The two fighters are giants and have a good record to their name, ignoring Francis loss from the last fight. This is one of the fights for entertainment for me, although if I am at gunpoint to pick one of the two fighters, I will pick the more familiar name Francis to win the fight.

Yeah totally agree they lack the promotion I remember Jake Paul raising the hands of both fighters that was over a month ago, and we have the weight in right now and there's nothing coming to my feeds where I am actiovely subscribes to sports pages they need to do collaboration with sports pages
By the way this is the livestream of their weigh in
looking forward to watch this fight live.

It was not a friendly face-off, Ferreira was more fired-up but both looked confident and well-prepared. Francis usually has a size advantage, but not this time. The height and reach advantage is on Ferreira's side, but in terms of weight Renan is only 4.7 pounds heavier, which is nothing in the heavyweight category.
Bookies are giving Renan a bit more chances than before, but he's still the underdog.
Everyone expects the fight to end by KO and betting on it going to distance you could get a payout of x8.0, and I can envision a scenario of that happening, i.e. if Ngannou is dominant in his striking, it could force Ferreira to take it to the ground, but it won't be easy to keep him there or submit him.

Yes, I saw them going head to heat and Ferreira was fired-up even heat batting Francis if I'm not mistaken.

Ngannou is the slight favorite, but yes, Ferreira is what we call a live underdog, and bookies are giving him a chance to win here. And in this case, I think this fight could really ended up in a knock out by either of this two. Specially Francis who wants to make a comeback in MMA and so he wants a impressive win again to hype his name.

The marketing isn't so bad at all with this Battle of Giants. Lots of publicity for this card, so much media covering this fight too. I think the PFL marketing is becoming wider already I think because of Ngannou.
PFL is becoming competitive with UFC. Although it's not much of th most popular but so many of MMA promotions are sprouting in every region, ONEchamp is just big in Asia.
Wish to see Ngannou win so he can comeback to boxing as well.

I don't know about that. There seemed to be very little hype initially and things improved only very shortly before the fight day. Personally I wasn't getting any feeds until I started looking up for that fight, but I guess that widely differs between each person and their search history etc.
I wonder if the UFC would prefer Francis to win that fight or lose it, either way, it's not a good look to lose your heavyweight champion to a rival organisation. I hope they will learn their lesson.

Damn, scary Francis Ngannou as he knockout Renan Ferreira in round 1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qV5LsxBF7IM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qV5LsxBF7IM)
So obviously he is back again, I thought the fight will last a good 3 rounds. But Francis is still in his prime and Ferreira has good strategy and almost had Francis hands and I thought that he is going to lock it out.

I didn't watch the fight although have been trying my best to keep afloat the all section but it's still not that possible for me, but I believe the fight was yesterday being 19th.
I have to follow up with the link you drop here fo get updated how they goes.
Thanks.

It just come up on my feed recently the day before the fight and normally yahoo don't publish fights like this but this time it was on their sports section.
Anyway congrats to Ngannou, I forgot to bet. But if I had it could have been Ngannou. I didn't imagine winning by KO in the 1st Rnd. Good for him. Seem an easy win when I look at it on YouTube.
-
Ngannou did not disappoint. I expected Ferreira to cause much more trouble and maybe even get a surprise win (given Francis' long time off of the MMA) but he got destroyed in less than 4 minutes of round one. So pretty much what most people expected.
I wonder what's next for Ngannou.

At times we may fail to bet, but at least we can watch the event and the manner in which it ends – such as that fight – during its final moments. I mean Ngannou is a beast and a first-round knock out definitely had many of us awestruck. If you saw the fight, whether live or through a YouTube link , it was rather obvious that Banghwan used his power advantage well in this fight. But even if we weren’t able to bet, it was gratifying to see such a drubbing being dealt out.
A victory like this should actually make the fans have a even more believe in the resilience of the young star. It is also critical in the fight world different things can occur at any given time and that Ngannou is still among the best in the ring. Well done to him, and who knows, maybe there will be another opportunity to try to predict the result of his next fight!

Ngannou is more determined to win the fight and win it decisively; he really needs to because of his humiliating loss to Joshua and he wants his son to be proud of him.
He is much better and at ease with MMA than boxing because he can use all his skills, from boxing and kicking to wrestling, I expect a lot of great fights ahead of Ngannou and he will also make PFL great with him around.

I saw this as a motivation to win the fight, as he did win it in he first round in a dominating manner.

I noticed his as well, he looks to be a better fighter with his legs and hands than just hands alone. Maybe he should stick with it and get less involved with boxing.
-
I said before that it would not go past round 2 which most of us predicted anyway. What I didn't expect is how the fight stoppage happened. A takedown followed by a ground and pound is what wrestlers usually do but not someone like Ngannou ;D or maybe I got used to watching him knocking out opponents while they are on their feet?
-
And we could also say that Francis did the right decision, to go out on the UFC because Dana White doesn't want to give his due. And then he goes to boxing, almost beat Tyson Fury and then earn millions, getting knockout by AJ and still get a ton of money.
Now he goes back to his roots and win decisively ad for sure make a lot of money as well. So he did what is good for him and so he is making the fruits out of it.
-
I really wouldn't mind seeing Francis returning to the UFC. They should be able to offer him more than the PFL, the question is whether they are willing to.
But even Dana White was to take him back, I don't see a superfight with Jones likely to happen. If Jones wins with Stipe, he would either have to face Aspinall or vacate his belt. I think Ngannou Vs Aspinall would be much more possible, with a winner facing the winner of Jones Vs Miocic later on. That would be something.
I don't quite understand the format of the PFL and what type of contract Ngannou has with them. It's supposed to be a league, but Francis (or Ferreira) is not even listed in the Heavyweight 2024 standings:
https://pflmma.com/standings/2024
And, according to the Tapology, Francis is currently ranked 4th with Ferreira being No. 1:

I saw Aspinall fight and he is good, Dana should make a Jones - Aspinall fight happen, Aspinall has the potential to reign as a champion if given the chance, Right now the best MMA fighters are on UFC, Ngannou will eventually lose opponents on PFL or on other organizations, its on their deal if they can make a deal for Ngannou to make a comeback because Ngannou is the lenial champion of the UFC, UFC heavyweight will have huge attraction if they have Ngannou there again.

Aspinall has prospect that can become a fighter and rise the rank and become a champion as he was seen when he challenged for the championship against Jones. Right now, the UFC currently harbors many of the best fighters, and the inclusion of Ngannou at heavyweight would be an extra incentive for viewership of that division. Since something can be arranged, one or two heavyweight bouts could really heat up the competition and become more popular in the organization.

That was an impressive knock out but seems some of the fist hits the back of Ferrieras head though that position really is compromised for Ferriera that is why he ends badly with it and seems Ngannou has good condition in this fight I can feel the energy.
-
It was a good fight as Francis ngannou makes his return to the MMA with a first round knockout over Ferreira that's just to prove that he's still the kind when it comes to MMA as many people has lost faith in him due to his disappointing short spell in professional boxing. Going back to where he made his name is commendable and he didn't disappoint with his performance Even though many didn't see a round one knockout coming this win will give him that confidence booster and put him in the right frame of mind going forward because many people list faith in him. If he's consistent with his performance this way he can even make a second return to professional boxing.
I think Ferreira really underestimated ngannou allot that's why he lost this way Ferreira should have given ngannou some respect cautious in the match and always be on the defense and get ngannou on his week point when the opportunity present it self but he went out right for an attack over an experienced ngannou and he was punish for it. Going forward ngannou next opponent should be careful and take him serious

Or Francis Ngannou was much better prepared for this fight. From the side, it looked like one was a real pro and other was an amateur, because Renan Ferreira did not even manage to land anything or cause any damage to his opponent. From the side it looked that they were different class fighters.

Ferreira is also a champ and this match was being arranged more than 3 months before the said date. I'm sure they are both given a long period for preparing for the bout like they do it on UFC.
I think Francis is intimidating in the middle of the cage. The ones he can't intimidate are boxers because those guys are well aware of their advantage over Francis and boxing rules is much different.
-

Ferreira had much more time to prepare than that 3 months. The PFL has announced Francis would be fighting the winner of Ferreira Vs Bader before that fight, so that was before February 2024.
So Ferreira had much more time than Francis, who had one boxing fight with Joshua in between.
No excuses for Renan.
