This could lead to a massive adoption. Imagine millions of google users being able to buy and sell crypto just with their google account.
This is probably due to Trump crypto friendly policies, to make America a big home of crypto industries.
-
This is good news, in my opinion, and I would be more aggressive in adopting it if I were to follow suit. It's fantastic to see those types of things in one of the most powerful countries in the world. The easier it is to use, the easier it would be to adapt, and a lot of people already have Google accounts, so just a simple app would have instant adoption. I hope that it's protected and secure.
-
If this rumor is true, i wonder about it's availability. Google Pay already exist since 2011, but until now it only support about 90 countries[1]. I also wonder whether they'll launch custodial wallet/service since they already own money transition license (for Google Pay) and have some experience combating scam/hack on their Google Pay user.

I think they are creating a custodial wallet/service, so the service might be good if you can add it as a balance to your wallet and pay from it, but if it is just a wallet, it might cause great harm, as it might be the beginning of forcing users to deal with the custodial wallet as a Google wallet and stop using any open source wallets like electrum.
-
If they are integrating google pay into a crypto wallet then definitely yes, it's probably used by billions of people so even people who have no idea of what is crypto will come to know about it's existence. Not sure they can able to implement in all the countries because different countries have different regulations so they might want to take it by region.

It would be easy if the service was custodial and only Google had access to the private key. But then it would be hard to consider it a wallet. I read some articles about it and it seems that it will be adding crypto address within Google accounts.
Although the integration of BTC wallets with Google accounts raises the issue of centralized control over data and potential vulnerabilities.

Definitely it's not something that we can recommend because it's simply against the core nature of cryptos. However it will introduce crypto assets to unknown people and then things are in their own hands about how they develop their knowledge related to crypto. I simply consider it's kind of promotional event rather the true adoption.

You can use it just for small amounts, or to make a travel abroad in a country with different currency, etc.
You don't have to put your life savings in that wallet....
I think different kinds of wallets for different purposes are always good to have

Imagine the amount of data's google can get
Not excluding ones they have already gathered from their users.
Well such will make transacting easier
I'm curious if they are going to create their token

Yes, it has to come by region because there are many countries that are not showing interest in crypto probably due to the high potential of Bitcoin to dominate their Fiats, and actually, if this rumor becomes true it will boost cryptocurrency awareness and increase adoptions as time progresses.
A likely integration of Google pay into crypto wallets will definitely be a massive adoptions and popularity of cryptocurrency to the entire world. I am sure that in the future Bitcoin may become a standard if more organizations and companies are involved into crypto business transactions.

Google has billions of users worldwide. Meta too ( i think meta has like 1/3 the world population as users).
If those companies accept bitcoin as payment method, this is the mass adoption everyone is talking about since 2010. This can be huge.
Ofc the mass adoption won't happen in Electrum, but in a UX friendly wallet

Twitter (X) already accept Bitcoin on it's tips feature[1], but the adaption isn't as massive as some people expected. Although i believe it's partially because they never promote about it massively.

And it'll be mobile wallet rather than desktop or hardware wallet, since it's what people usually have.

Looks a nice UX and wallter integration with twitter..
I got this image showing how it works, in the article in you mentioned in your post
First you need to use the Cash App

It is indeed a good news. But on the other hand, it might turn to be a problem to the right way of bitcoin usage but will definitely improve adoption. Just imagine how we are battling with exchanges now. Newbies use exchanges as wallets. This might get worse than being a custodial wallet. But we cannot fight much against it, because it is one of those things that accompanies mass adoption.

Google is trying to use its monopoly position and convince its users to keep their money. Their users are mostly complete noobs for any tech stuff and I see this as a serious problem in the announcement.

I think I have a Google Wallet (? I am not sure but I have a Google Pay account and I access it from the Google Wallet app), but trying to make it like Cash App is not really going to benefit us advanced users. It's primarily for the people who don't have exposure to crypto I think, as the rest of us can simply buy P2P and transfer to a non-custodial wallet.

I think it is a win-win for everyone in long term
Bitcoin is cheaper when you are making international transfers. Faster and cheaper than PayPal as well.
Google is very good in making friendly UX. It will make bitcoin easier to use. Who wants to know more, may use other wallets.

For years I worked as a system administrator, I don't even know how many gmail setups I made, personal or corporate. I responsibly claim that a large part of G users do not even have a clear picture of how everything works.
For example, even after xx years, some users still call me to help them with the G password. Now they will have the opportunity to store digital currencies as well. This is an excellent opportunity for scammers
-
Mass adoption, mass monopoly, we can call it many things, but ultimately it's like letting the wolves guard the chickens, too risky. And it's an unnecessary risk, since we have many other tools to protect our assets. When all this goes down the line, I'd like to know how many people lose their private keys, how many scams are carried out, and how many people lose their money.
But as always happens in the digital world, many people prefer to press a button, rather than understanding and learning what happens internally when that button is pressed.
G00gle can keep its software, luckily, not everyone needs it.
-

This is so true. I've been trying to move my 2FA codes from a centralized app lately, and the process is tedious. If I don't have any experience losing some important accounts I think I'll just procrastinate instead of moving them asap. Luckily I don't have to repeat the same process after I moved to the new app, although I'll have a new problem of making sure my backups are safe. It's much better compared to having no control over your backup tho.
-

I think that is fine.
People use VISA and they don't know how it works. Not everyone needs to understand that well.
The same about cryptocurrencies or about gmail.... People have different interests and hobbies

If I am not mistaking, almost all android phones used are connected to google or have a google mail account installed in it, and the people using smart phones are now going to be able to participate in the crypto market, by either buying to hold for the long run or buying and selling for a quick profit. This will foster the massive adoption of crypto currency utilization worldwide.
I won't have any doubt on that regarding Trump wanting to make America a big home of crypto industries. He made an open speech on accepting or taking crypto currencies into the US national reserve, and every other thing he will do, will be for the same purpose of accepting the use of Bitcoin, and this will be a take to other nations to follow sute.

In the comparison you made with VISA, there's a huge difference that changes everything. It's true that I, for example, don't know how the VISA system works, but I don't have to worry because VISA has its own security experts who are responsible for the security of user data and funds. However, in the world of cryptocurrencies, we are the ones who must take care of and worry about that security. Therefore, the more we know and learn, the better.
I've always thought that everything we learn on our own not only makes us wiser, but also better prepares us for potential problems.
I'm not going to let G00gle take care of the security of my cryptocurrencies, I'm already there for that.
-
This is good news if Google is also stepping to have a google wallet integration and by adding bitcoin on it. This will open a lot of people to have an idea that even Google likes to have Bitcoin and crypto to its platform. It adds trust to those that have been so doubtful about crypto. Crypto is the future, Bitcoin is going to be the best asset in the entire history and everyone hasn't adopted it yet and when Google official launches and advertises it, a great introduction will shock the entire world.

I really like technology stuff. But not everyone do. And that is fine. Only tech-savy guys using bitcoin will never lead us to mass adoption.
I don't know why VISA security should be better than Google's, as Google is a much bigger company. I see no problem in people making payments in Google Play store using bitcoin or USDT or whatever just making a few clicks, just like it happens with Visa.
I won't store my life savings in a Google Wallet, simple because it isn't meant for that.

That you like technology (just like me) is something I've been able to deduce over time by reading your posts, but not everyone understands it like we do. Yes, "big" G is a very large company with enormous capabilities, I agree, but not even such a large company is able to avoid all threats, and as an example, I will use a post I wrote a few weeks ago: Android antivirus that is really safe for cryptocurrency wallet? (https://www.altcoinstalks.com/index.php?topic=329102.msg1746212#msg1746212).
In that equation, we have a huge company, with millions of users who can store their cryptocurrency in a wallet, and thousands of malicious apps (I'll never understand why they call them apps, programs is the correct word) running on millions of devices.
There are not enough numbers in the universe to enumerate the number of things that can go wrong.

In addition, you don't use VISA itself. You use a card that your bank gives you that happens to run on the VISA network. You then enter the card information on a website you want to pay at, which then collects the money from VISA.
Actually, it is more complimented than this (the website itself usually does not collect your credit card info or talk to VISA itself but instead connects to a payment gateway that does all that itself), but the point is that you don't even see VISA being used here - it just works.
In the case of Bitcoin, you want as many wallet providers, payment merchants, and websites integrating with Bitcoin as possible so that you don't have to give ordinary people payment instructions such as "send 0.1234 BTC to this address" which is subject to social engineering, and then you want them to just use a passcode or a fingerprint to unlock the wallet on their device i.e. phone (as that's what most people are using anyway - it can just be the same as their lock screen unlock method).

Just like you have a bank account in your phone, which is there with other thousands malicious apps, you will also have a cryptocurrency wallet.
I have been using cryptocurrency wallets in my phone since 2017, I was never hacked, never lost funds.
However, I just store small amounts in my phone. My stash is in a hardware wallet.

To be honest I am quite uneasy with a monolith business organization like Google entering the crypto space and incorporating Bitcoin into its own wallet infrastructure. However, there is no doubt that this can be another milestone for Bitcoin and cryptocurrency as we know that Google is quite massive. I think I heard that they will introduce the feature of sending and receiving cryptocurrency just using the normal email address and this idea alone can be a lot since people would not anymore deal with a long and confusing wallet address. Now, we don't know when this plan will really materialized eventually but I am welcoming it as an option people can use.
