Energy giant BP would consider partnering with blockchain startups that are doing initial coin offerings, and it's even tested tokens internally, an executive said Wednesday.

Speaking at the Blockchain Expo in London, Julian Gray, the technology director for BP's digital innovation organization, voiced a common theme: non-financial enterprises are perhaps more open to open-blockchain innovation than their financial-services counterparts.

Gray said:

    "We haven't done anything with public chains yet. But that doesn't mean we won't. We have done proof of concepts using tokens internally, transferring value."

Inside BP, he said, there's a lot of education that needs to be done. But there is a handful of people at the company, formerly known as British Petroleum, now who realize that blockchains, even the open kind, are not merely "hacker territory."

Gray said that while his own innovation department is robustly funded, he is open to working with others that have gone the ICO route. 

"Would we partner with people who are doing this stuff? Yes, I think so," he said. "Not right now, but I wouldn't be surprised if we did."

A research project funded and co-run by NASA is looking to leverage the Ethereum blockchain’s smart contracts technology to automate spacecraft maneuvering while avoiding space debris.

In developments that could potentially have significant implications for deep space probes, NASA is putting resources behind a research project that fundamentally envisions the use of blockchain technology to enhance and make space communications and navigation more efficient and safer.

The research project, named the ‘Resilient Networking and Computing Paradigm’, will be lead by Dr. Jin Wei Kocsis, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Akron (UA).

The recipient of a three-year $330,000 grant, Kocsis will look to develop a cognitive architecture wherein spacecraft will no longer need to rely on crucial information from scientists on earth.

Instead, Ethereum-based smart contracts will help spacecraft ‘think on their own’ to detect and evade floating space debris that could prove significantly damaging in the event of a collision, an announcement from UA explains.

Dr. Kocsis added:

    In this project, the Ethereum blockchain technology will be exploited to develop a decentralized, secure, and cognitive networking and computing infrastructure for deep space exploration. The blockchain consensus protocols will be further explored to improve the resilience of the infrastructure.

Uluslararası Para Fonu IMF’nin başkanı Christian Lagarde kripto paralara karşı ketum duruşunda yumuşamaya gitti. Pazartesi günü yayımlanan blog yazısında Lagarde kripto paraların bu sefer “aydınlık taraflarına” dikkat çekti.

Bundan aşağı yukarı bir ay önce Lagarde kripto paraların “karanlık tarafına” karşı dikkatli olunması gerektiği uyarısında bulunmuştu. IMF başkanı şimdi ise “Bitcoin ve benzeri kripto varlıkların potansiyel faydalarına” yoğunlaşıyor. Yazıdan bir pasajı alıntılamak gerekirse:

    “Sağduyulu bir yaklaşım benimsersek kripto paraları aforoz etmenin de kripto paralarla her şeyi unutup mutluluktan havaya uçmanın da mantıklı olmayacağını görürüz.”

Ocak ayında düzenlenen Dünya Ekonomik Forumunda konuşan Christian Lagarde kripto paraları kapsayan yasa dışı faaliyetlerin kontrol edilmesi gerektiğini ifade etmişti. Lagarde şimdiki yazısında tarafsız bir yaklaşımın benimsenmesi gerektiğinin altını çiziyor.

This is a pretty wild case: A shifty cryptocurrency startup which used a stock photo of Hollywood actor Ryan Gosling for the headshot of their lead graphic designer has managed to raise almost a million in an initial coin offering (ICO).

Miroskii – as the company is called – has since attracted the attention of Reddit with its crafty marketing shenanigans.

But things actually get worse: as pointed out by numerous users on Reddit and Twitter, it appears that the shady cryptocurrency startup used ripped images for pretty much all of its team members.

But unlike the fake Gosling – who goes by the name Kevin Belanger according to Miroskii – the rest of stolen photos featured no celebrities.

CNET has since dug up more evidence showing that pretty much every photo which appears on Miroskii has been snatched from real people (with different names) who have nothing to do with blockchain or cryptocurrency.

But if this wasn’t enough, there are even more red flags.

Miroskii has yet to share its white paper with its investors. Its website reads that the company will offer users their “own decentralized bank” with support for credit and debit card providers like Visa, Mastercard, and American Express, but its white paper is still “coming soon.”

Instead, all investors have to consult with when making a decision whether or not to pledge their money is a shoddy roadmap, with practically no informational value whatsoever:

“Miroskii Coin is developed and brought to business by the experts from China, Hongkong, Singapore and Japan to ease the crypto revolution in financial products,” the company’s marketing promises. “It is developed under its own highly secure encrypted decentralized blockchain technology.”

“Miroskii coin is been tested, approved and accepted by most of the industry giants who has already started using the MRC (Miroskii Coin) in their closed B2B sector,” it continues. “As per the high demand from these industries we were requested to start the first ICO stage for intuitional companies only.”

“Its time to be a part of the Crypto Revolution,” it concludes. The typo is theirs, for what it’s worth.

But here is the most shocking part: this fraudulent effort has raked in more than $830,000 from over 380 naive investors.

Digital currency exchange Coinbase is building on a recent hiring streak with a deal to buy Earn.com announced Monday. As part of the acquisition, the crypto company will bring on Earn's founder and CEO as its first-ever chief technology officer.

Before running Earn, which lets users send and receive digital currency for replying to emails and completing tasks, Srinivasan was a general partner at venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.
