New Badge - Best Karma Earner (Monthly)

Given that we have a lot of badges on this forum and that adding new ones is obviously not a problem for the administration, I would suggest that we add a new one that would be temporarily awarded every month to the user who received the most +karma in the past month. Apart from the fact that it would in some way be a recognition for that user, it would certainly motivate other members to try even harder and try to win that badge.

It's no secret that this idea occurred to me because I received the most +karma for last month - but if the proposal were to be accepted, I suggest that the badges be awarded only from next month.

For the official result, we can use the @PX-Z tool -> AltcoinsTalks Top Karma Earners (Monthly Edition)

I think this is a problem when the admin/mods can give multiple karma , like 50+ in a single transaction. While other users can only give 1.

This would be basically someone chosen by the admin to get the badge...

If we had multiple "Karma sources" like in BTT, things would be different imo.

It's only admin and president that give multiple karma in a single transactions, not mods. Admin rarely gives out multiple karma, and president was elected, so I think that's a fair privilege.

While I see the suggestion you are trying to make, we do infact have multiple karma sources, they are all the users who are Senior above. Again, this isn't like BTT, because karma doesn't run out. If there were no merit sources at BTT, then the merit would run out. There are no official "karma sources", and yet karma continues to be issued. I otherwise don't think the solution is to further centralise the distribution of karma among an even smaller group, which is effectively what would happen with these so-called sources. That's the major flaw in the merit system which we should be avoiding, not adopting.

What you are saying is that you are against a decentralization of the karma distribution system.

I think you are going too far with something that should have been just a little extra motivation for all forum members. That badge would not carry any extra privileges or benefits, but would only be, let's say, a small recognition of the forum to the person who received the most +karma that month.

That's not what I'm saying no and your math doesn't add up here. Based on karma logs, the number of Freemind gives is only a tiny fraction of the total number of karma issued (maybe 1% let's say).

What you are suggesting is having a smaller group of users, even respectable ones, who send what would likely be the majority of karma issued per month. Assuming that with say 50 merit sources (based on 50+ users that have 250+ karma that could be eligible), then suddenly that 1% could easily become 50% or more. Thus, the majority of karma would likely no longer be from all senior+ members, but instead a small (likely unelected) group of users. That would obviously centralize the distribution, not decentralize it.

Even if it were only 20-40% of karma sent, it would centralize a big chunk of the karma to a smaller group than it currently is. Further decentralization would be something like lowering requirements for eligibility to issue karma, to say full members, then there would be more karma sent from users than there currently are, an increase of 63% issuers to be specific.

Suggesting a new badge does not imply that one of the “rewards” is that the user receives more additional karma simply for receiving the badge. I can't speak for the admin, but when I give Karma (not related to the D.Team) I always give only one positive point.

The recognition itself or the reward, whatever you want to call it, is the badge itself, nothing more.

Any user can get extra Karma by being part of the D.Team, as you all know

I agree with bitmover's position here. The karma system is quite messy and undefined, and it should be fixed first, and only then introduce new features related to karma points.
I saw that one of the moderators promises +10 karma points for every find of spammers or plagiarists. That's ok, but if the karma badge would raise interest in it, it would probably result in us having more karma hunters.

Since the initiative Proposal: Karma requirements for ranks has been launched, I would rather devote myself to that, as well as the "post karma" feature which is in the process of integration.

Maybe I'm not objective, because I'm already too tired of various icons, and badges, and I'm certainly not a fan of adding new badges. So, I would rather dedicate to raising the quality of the forum, than decorating the forum profile.

Considering the direction in which the discussion went about something that was supposed to be fun and motivating, I am closing this topic and withdrawing the proposal about the new badge.
