Have moved discussion to Suggestion Box titled "Too many subforums" as is a valid suggestion and discussion, but doesn't belong in a report to mod topic. In some categories, this forum has too many subforums. I don't think a separate subforum is needed for each type of rule violation. That's why in almost every thread there is always a discussion about where the topic belongs.
100% agree, this has always been an issue here and there is always a need for further consolidation of boards. We have forum court for appeals of strikes & karma predominantly, and otherwise this section for reporting violations. The bounty cheaters child board is a little more complex, as usually requires hearing a defence from the accused, verifying evidence in an investigation, and otherwise Judges making some difficult decisions at times, sometimes as a panel of Judges. Realistically it should sub-board here, but it was decided sometime ago that these bigger cases should be dealt with by Judges, hence it's a sub-section of Forum Court. Dealing with spammers, plagiarists, etc is otherwise straightforward.
Especially for us who came from Btt, where we had two boards, Meta for forum stuff and Reputation for everything related to users, their reputation...
Unclear which subforum is for what, only opens up additional discussions and is subject to different interpretations. In the end, we deal with cosmetic things instead of substance.
Some sub-forums just need simple renaming for clarity. Like "Basic questions about the forum" should just be "Questions about the forum" in reality, as that's how it's treated. In the end it's not a major issue when topics end up in the wrong section, that's what mods are for. They can just move it to the correct section without it being a big deal or an issue. We can't expect every user to know exactly which board is for what, that is just something that is learnt over time from experience nothing else.
I am not saying that it is necessary to do the same thing as on Btt, but it could certainly be simplified.
Yes it could certainly be simplified, and previously has been courtesy of senate proposals. This is part of the reason I thought it might be worth bringing back the senate, in order to better organise the forum, given the suggestion box brings with it a lot of noise and not often a lot of agreement or consensus on issues there. But otherwise in the meantime I encourage you to continue to take such proposals to the suggestion box.
An additional thing is that forum points, and even karma, are not any kind of yardstick, nor are they important in showing someone's forum rank. Well, punishing by deducting any points is not an incentive to pay more attention.
Granted, punishing by points/tokens isn't a real punishment for those who have them. Naturally it works for lower-ranking users who don't however, but only as an additional punishment based on real $cost. Hence the strikes and tags such as Shill and AI are the real punishments here and have a dramatic effect, whereby ~99% of the time the user gives up violating the rules (becomes inactive) and instead usually creates a new account to instead adhere to the rules. Only ~1% take these punishments to the forum court in order to have strikes/tags removed, usually if it's an account worth saving.
