How can someone know when he or she has been given a negative karma?

Using the bot mentioned earlier can be helpful in detecting that someone is not intentionally targeting us with negative karma - and we have already had such a case on the forum (at least I only remember one). You really do have a point, receiving negative karma some times isn’t on the senders will, you can really make a mistakes sending positive karma and end up sending negative karma.  I once received negative karma but the users didn’t send it deliberately it was by mistake, I just saw that my karma point reduced which means I received a  negative karma and later on during the day i saw that my karma point increased back which means I received positive karma again but I wasn’t sure who it was. So sometimes mistake do occur when sending a positive karma if one isn’t much careful or mindful at times.

Maybe the problem is that some members don't really know under what circumstances and for what negative karma should be given - it's not because you don't agree with someone's opinion, which can sometimes be completely opposite to what most people think.

I, for one, have a negative opinion about some people from the crypto world, while some others perceive them as very important people - but it is important that everyone respects the opinion of another member - and if you don't want to read his posts, there is always an ignore option.

Exactly constructive criticism is the way but someone just try to offend them personally and that's when they increase the chance of getting negative karma even when they are right. Forum is supposed to be a friendly community and Karma system is aiming towards that as well.

Even from non-constructive criticism, we can learn things, such as knowing who not to waste our time on and remembering that there are many people in the world who can contribute good things to us.

We don't have a button to ignore users, but we do have a list where you can add them, which is basically the same thing.

Go to your profile and click Modify Profile, now you just have to go to Buddies/Ignore List, and that's it. It's very simple.

You're right, I meant the ignore option mentioned by @Freemind, which is located in the user profile, unlike BTT where any user can be ignored directly from their post. It's not exactly an option I prefer, because sometimes if you ignore someone and they post in the topic you're replying to, you might end up writing the same thing as them, which is kind of repetitive content.

Since karma signifies a user reputation or standing in the forum, can one easily check his karma score. is there a place where it's displayed in the forum, which can give one an idea of his standing in the community.

Karma ahs nothing to do with user's reputation but it is for the quality of the user's posts. And karma log has not been showing in the public because it is to avoid unnecessary drama in the forum.

Anything received by you will be displayed on your forum profile and once you click to check on it, you will discover it there, not only about karma alone now, but you can find any acheivement, group, rank, activity, post and other relevant information concerning your account on the profile summary, but some users care less in checking for some of these as they progress with the use of the forum.

You can search with username here, and can look for more tools provided by px-z, these tools are really helpful to get some idea of where you stand in the forum although, if you want monthly reports too, which are shared by PX-z too, in which he shared the most earned karma users in a list. You can also take an idea of how you are doing karma wise in compared to other members.

You can use the notifier bot to get notification of whenever you get a positive and negative karma, but you can't know who give you negative or positive karma on which posts with this telegram notifier also provided on this site.
