A recently launched website is making the rounds on social media, as it features a countdown to the ‘live unveiling’ of who Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of bitcoin, really is. Who’s behind the website or why it was launched isn’t clear.

The website, Gotsatoshi.com, was created back in May of 2017 according to WHOIS records, and merely features a ticking clock with a countdown that’ll end on May 14. The countdown seems to coincide with the Consensus conference, one of the largest blockchain conferences in the world.

This has seen some speculate it’s all a marketing stunt organized by CoinDesk, the firm behind the conference. Some, on the other hand, it may be a move made to distract cryptocurrency users from the event itself.

The countdown also ends close to an upcoming Bitcoin Cash hard fork on May 15. This will be the first hard fork the BCH blockchain will see after the last contentious one in November 15 of last year, which created Bitcoin Satoshi’s Vision (BSV).

Some speculate something important is going to happen at the time of the hard fork, as a mysterious entity started mining significant volumes of Bitcoin Cash last month, under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto.

According to Coin.Dance data, the entity has managed to get to 40% of the cryptocurrency’s hashrate. IT’s worth pointing out BCH supporters believe it follows the original Bitcoin whitepaper, authored by Satoshi Nakamoto.

The website also appears at a time in which Craig Wright, a prominent Australian computer scientist who claims to be the person behind the Nakamoto pseudonym, allegedly sued the CEO of Bitcoin.com Roger Ver for calling him a “liar and a fraud.”

John McAfee, an eccentric cybersecurity expert who predicted bitcoin will trade at $1 million by 2020, has claimed to know who created bitcoin, and claimed to be about to reveal who ti was. Shortly after, he tweeted out a supposed letter from his lawyers noting it would be a bad time to do so, as he is currently running for the Oval Office.

Nevertheless, McAfee claimed “at least a dozen crypto adherents” know the “true identity of Satoshi.” To this, he added he can assure the community it isn’t Craig Wright.

Despite the controversy CoinGeek, a website run by gambling entrepreneur Calvin Ayre, claims Wright has “proven beyond a doubt to ownership of CoinGeek that he was the main architect of Bitcoin, and that it was he who conceived and used the pseudonymous name of Satoshi Nakamoto.”
