The cost of -karma and/or penalties in points and ALTS

Previously I documented how negative karma over -10K causes a user to be unable to appeal in court, as would cost more than 26 million points to recover based on the exponential increase of cost by a factor of 4. Here I wanted to document the "real cost" of accounts with negative karma and strikes. Who can appeal -karma as well as strikes and/or penalties and who can't, the new cost in ALTS for removal, as well as the evolving relationship between karma, points and ALTS.

100-200 points = 1 ALTS

Below are examples of users who are able and not able to appeal due to amount of points or -karma and can be categorized into the following groups:

• Users who can afford to appeal their negative karma with points, but otherwise unable to appeal their plagiarism strike/penalty with negative karma
• Users who can not afford to appeal their negative karma with points, they are only able to pay for -karma and penalty removal in ALTS
• Members with neutral/positive karma who are able to appeal strikes and other penalties with points as well as karma

• When appealing in the court, the negative karma removal cost goes up by a factor of 4 as follows:
• 1 negative karma: - 100 to 400 points ~ equivalent to 1-4 ALTS
• 2 negative karma: - 400 to 1,000 points ~ equivalent to 2-10 ALTS
• 3 negative karma: - 1,600 to 4,000 points ~ equivalent to 8-40 ALTS
• 4 negative karma - 6,400 to 16,000 points ~ equivalent to 32-160 ALTS
• 5 negative karma - 25,600 to 64,000 points ~ equivalent to 128-640 ALTS

Neutral & Negative Karma with Strikes

You cannot appeal this [plagiarism] strike if you have negative karma. Please read resetting negative karma.

Plagia strike 10 ALTS penalty with neutral and negative karma:

• 0 karma: 10 ALTS // User can appeal plagia strike as has 1,900+ points (19 ALTS worth of points) costing 100-1,000 points to open a case.
• -1 karma: 13 ALTS // User has enough points to have negative karma removed (100-400), but can not appeal plagiarism strike with negative karma
• -2 karma: 16 ALTS // User has enough points to have negative karma removed (400-1,000),  but can not appeal plagiarism strike with negative karma
• -3 karma: 19 ALTS // User has enough points to open a court case (100-1,000), but not enough to remove negative karma (1,600-4,000).
• -4 karma: 22 ALTS  //  User has enough points to have negative karma revmoed (6,400-16,000),  but can not appeal plagiarism strike with negative karma.
• -5 karma: 25 ALTS // User has enough points to open a court case (100-1,000), but not enough to remove negative karma (25,600-64,000).
• -7 karma: 31 ALTS // User has enough points to open a court case (100-1,000), but not enough to remove negative karma (>400K).
• -8 karma: 34 ALTS // User has enough points to open a court case (100-1,000), but not enough to remove negative karma (>1.6M).
• -11 karma: 43 ALTS // // User has enough points to open a court case (100-1,000), but not enough to remove negative karma (>100M).

Consequence: Most users don't have enough points to have negative karma removed and therefore can not appeal for plagiarism strike/penalties to be removed.
-The user with neutral karma is able to appeal - No users over -5K can afford to have negative karma removed by appeal.
Result: To have -karma and strikes removed most users have to pay in ALTS, others with enough activity can appeal with points.

>10 Negative Karma with Strikes

5 negative karma: - 25,600 to 64,000 points ~ equivalent to 256-640 ALTS
6 negative karma: - 102,400 to 256,000 points ~ equivalent to 1K-2.5K ALTS
7 negative karma: - 409,600 to 1,024,000 points ~ equivalent to 4K-10.2K ALTS
8 negative karma: - 1,638,400 to 4,096,000 points ~ equivalent to 16.3K-40.9K ALTS
9 negative karma: - 6,553,600 to 16,384,000 points ~ equivalent to 65.5K-163.8K ALTS
10 negative karma: - 26,214,400 to 65,536,000 points ~ equivalent to 262.1K-655.3K ALTS

Plagia strike 10 ALTS penalty with negative karma:

• -12 karma: 46 ALTS // Unable to appeal, not enough points
• -13 karma: 49 ALTS // Unable to appeal, not enough points
• -20 karma: 70 ALTS // Unable to appeal, not enough points
• -25 karma: 85 ALTS // Unable to appeal, not enough points
• -33 karma: 109 ALTS // Unable to appeal, not enough points
• -35 karma: 115 ALTS // Unable to appeal, not enough points
• -40 karma: 130 ALTS // Unable to appeal, not enough points
• -51 karma: 163 ALTS // Unable to appeal, not enough points
• -52 karma: 166 ALTS // Unable to appeal, not enough points

Consequence: Users don't have enough points to have negative karma removed and therefore can not appeal for plagiarism strike/penalties to be removed.
Result: To have -karma and strikes removed they pay in ALTS.

Negative Karma with Strikes and/or Penalties

If you have negative karma, you can appeal it in the Forum Court. Reserved for valued members who have points

Plagia strike (PS) 10 ALTS with plagia penalty (PP) 50 ALTS and other behavioral strikes.

• -2 karma + PS            = 16 ALTS + 1 strike penalty // User doesn't have enough points to open a case (100-1,000)
• -7 karma + PS + PP   = 81 ALTS // Unable to appeal, not enough points
• -9 karma + PS + PP   = 87 ALTS + 3 strike penalty // Unable to appeal, not enough points
• -14 karma + PS + PP = 102 ALTS // Unable to appeal, not enough points
• -15 karma + PS + PP = 105 ALTS + 3 strike penalty // Unable to appeal, not enough points
• -16 karma + PS + PP = 108 ALTS + 3 strike penalty // Unable to appeal, not enough points
• -40 karma + PS          = 130 ALTS + LQP penalty // Unable to appeal, not enough points
• -55 karma + PS + PP = 215 ALTS // Unable to appeal, not enough points

Consequence: Users don't have enough points to have negative karma removed and therefore can not appeal for plagiarism strike/penalties to be removed.
Result: To have -karma and strikes removed they pay in ALTS.

Positive Karma with Strikes and/or Penalties

To open a court case:
1- You need to create a new post detailing your issue.
2- If the court find that you were wrong, you lose 1000 points.
3- Opening a case costs 100 - 1000 points.

Plagia strike 10 ALTS penalty with positive karma:

• +1 karma with strike: 10 ALTS // User can appeal in court as has 2,000+ points (20 ALTS worth of points) costing 100-1,000 points to open a case.
• +2 karma with strike & penalty: 60 ALTS // User can appeal in court as has 4,600+ points (46 ALTS worth of points) costing 100-1,000 points to open a case.
• +2, +4 and +8 karma with strike: 10 ALTS // Users have enough points to open a court case (100-1,000) and can appeal with positive karma for strike removal.

Consequence: Users are all able to appeal their strike as don't have any negative karma
Result: They appeal with points to have strike removed or pay in ALTS.

Conclusion: While the threshold for higher ranking users lies around 25,000-256,000 points to have negative karma removed by a judge (-5K to -6K), the limit for most users lies closer to -3K or -4K for regular members (1,600-16,000), and -1K to -2K for newer members (100-1,000 points) or inactive who have experienced point decay. Not forgetting that users who have had their points withdrawn would also have less points available for appealing negative karma.

Either way, if you believe in the system we have here, it becomes notably cheaper to pay with ALTS to have negative karma or penalties removed, than appealing with points (that you can lose all of). Only losing half your points by payment in our token should be considered a luxury to most users:
