Total noob question.

What's the best cryptocurrency to buy altcoins. litecoin, btc? i am not the best at finance/math... but the price of btc is higher so it wouldnt make sense to buy btc only to buy altcoins.

BTC prices are very high, but it means they are rising very slowly.
Also, BTC is not altcoin
If you want to invest in altcoin, go to the ICO because they promise to raise prices 10-20 times immediately after the ICO. For long term investment, look to the projects of companies with long history and  stable development.
If you want to invest even longer, choose traditional coins

Mr. Jennabea, your question look a little bit unclear, but  i think that all coins are Cryptocurrency, and Bitcoin, been the first coin could be used to buy any altcoins or you could as well use Litecoin, ETH, Dash, monero, XRP etc to buy any coin after exchange, but this situation largely depend on the coin you desire to buy whether for investing or trading or HOLDing.
