For newcomers to the market, the only thing I know is, that it is advised to avoid meme-coins, as they may not be good for long-term holding. It is also better to conduct your research than to rely on the opinions of others when it comes to investing.
I would also recommend that to newbies, but i would even say they should avoid altcoins totally while they are still new, altcoins are so risky and there are too many new ones that are being created and launched on exchanges. A newbie will likely make a mistake and buy too many shitcoins if they look for altcoins, buy only BTC for now and if you want to diversify, buy different assets, i.e. gold, silver, etc.

I change what I said. I had forgotten that meme coins is also among the top altcoins in the market. Just like Dogecoin, which is among the top ranked, the top 10 altcoins, which is a perfect example. But it's not recommended for the newbies to invest in Dogecoin because they might not understand the true nature of this meme coin. Even if Dogecoin is the very first meme-coin, it is not be the best choice for new investors.

BTC, ETH and BNB are still the best at the moment, even though recently the cryptocurrency market is experiencing a pump moment, because the halving has not yet occurred, buying BTC as an investment instrument still has the opportunity to gain profits for the next few months or for mid-term investments.

Meanwhile, ALT SEASON is not yet visible, this is usually a phenomenon that occurs during halving, usually after halving or after BTC SEASON. The safest is top coin for investment needs, for transactions I like LTC and DOGE because the transaction fees are quite low.

Many people prefer receiving recommendation from others even when they are not sure of what to do, its not that bad requesting from others, but we should also take it a responsibility of making our own personal research so as to add up to what others have suggested to us, it will not appears as if we have zero idea about what we are going into, some people may also mislead others if they see that they are novice in it, that is why we have the internet to research.

Doing your research is always important because as you said, one might not be suggesting projects or tokens that are worth investing in and if the person asking for suggestions goes ahead and makes investments without looking them up themselves they might incur losses due to that. So whenever someone asks a community for suggestions, they need to make sure that they are taking those suggestions, doing their due diligence, and then deciding what projects they should go for.

Some newbies don't even ask anyone for suggestions or assistance, they watch a few videos, see some posts on social media, and start making investments based on those resources which is the worst thing one can do. Do that only if you don't love your money, otherwise, you shouldn't be making investment based on what you read over the internet written by anyone.

Newbies usually have one syntom of fear in them when it comes to investing in any coin whose price has far exceeded $10. Even if you tell a newbie to invest in Bitcoin, the person will feel like you are giving them the wrong advice because they will begin to imagine how they can afford a whole bitcoin because of how expensive the price has become. They fail to realize that Bitcoin can be acquired in fractions, and it's better to earn their little profit from Bitcoin rather than lose all their assets to a meme coin or some shitcoin.

Not only that memecoins are not good for long-term investing purposes, but the whole of altcoins are not also. They are only good for short-term plans. For Instance, if you invest in them now, within a short time, when you have made some profits, you can withdraw your profits because leaving your profits to grow more, can leave you disappointed and you will end up feeling bad about the missing opportunity that passed you by.

Diversify investment from top coin if you want because top coin always gives good profit. Also now there are many new altcoins that are diversifying with the hype so you can buy good tokens from within. But this does not mean that every currency will see the same success, even in the long term which is why you need to be very careful about what you invest in and you should definitely try to diversify your portfolio. You never know which sector might blow up next, or when the next bull run might start tripling crypto prices. Additionally, my personal portfolio is btc, eth, dogs, notcoin, right now.

BTC, ETH is a mandatory investment, But I can't imagine the Notcoin you choose, and yes it's your choice.
I hold some of the top altcoins like SOLANA, BNB and some memecoins that I quite believe like $KOKO with a very strong community.

Not only holding the top altcoins, tap needs several altcoins that will have high upside potential, in the memecoin sector especially now that is being hyped.

Actually i don't like meme coin holding much but dogs coin has different vitality and it is totally different from other meme coin. By looking at their maeketcap you can guess which line it will go in the future. A large marketcap of $407 dollars and a maximum supply of 550 billion tokens. However, there is already a circulating supply of 516 billion dogs. As a new project it quickly got to the top list on cmc so i want to see it's future well. pavel durov is always giving the best support where many dogs holders are able to earn money for free.

Well, I will not say negative things about DOGS because TBH, seeing it staying on the top for quite some time is for me surprising already. I mean look at Hamster Kombat and the price of token right now.

The community of DOGS is firm and they support the project that much. The problem right now is how they will sustain it. Right now they're #182 on Coingecko, and is down 50% from it's previous ATH. TBH, I expect that the price of their token will plummet just like what happened with Hamster Kombat, but it wasn't the case. I wonder how will the project be relevant in the upcoming months and how they will maintain or even go above and reach that top 100 in terms of market cap. I mean dogwifhat and even the useless PEPE token are on the top already. :D

since OP wants to get coin recommendations, so I agree with the point in choosing BTC as a medium to long term investment... but sorry, for the recommendation point to invest in gold and silver, it is not included in the cryptocurrency space... so if diversification in the cryptocurrency space is done, then my recommendation is on BTC, ETH, BNB and other top coins...

what needs to be remembered is, even though this is a recommendation, there is no guarantee that within 6 months it will bring profit, it could also bring loss due to the volatility nature, so be careful when making investment decisions.

We all are witnessing a never ending dump in the crypto market as of now, but at the same time this could be an opportunity to get the best cryptos at the bottom low.

As I am quite new to crypto currencies.. can I have your picks of the top coins in which money could be put in, for a holding period of at least six months.

Thanks in advance.
Wrong, not ever dump because after rains comes the sun. It is just a long lasting dump.

As said that you are new here, I would encourage you to go for reputable and potential coins which the assurance of your funds would be secured firstly and not the eager chasing of quick profits.

You just can't have such people of duration to hold a coin while expecting profits. This is volatile market and you can only make profits when the market movements goes towards your favour. So best is to buy your coins and keep holding in strive of making profits

This is the main reason why newbies should only stick to buying bitcoin and hodli for long, so that they can enjoy the market volatility to increase their bitcoin portfolio if they can buy whenever they have the money. It is only bitcoin that has the high odd of surviving in the market and continous increase in price overtime even if currently the volatility is bitcoin is getting low.
