Google and X ads are the new weapon for crypto scammers

Crypto scammers, pose a serious threat to users. These harmful programs unlawfully take cryptocurrency from victims' wallets using various tactics, such as launching campaigns, creating deceptive websites, making connections to wallets, interacting with smart contracts, transferring assets, and using obscuration.

To break it down, a crypto drainer uses a harmful program designed to swipe cryptocurrency from your wallet. They work by fooling you into approving transactions that allow the attacker to move your funds elsewhere, often without your knowledge or consent.

Scam Sniffer, a provider of anti-scam solutions, found a series of attacks by crypto drainer malware that stole around $59 million from 63,210 victims. This was done by embedding a wallet drainer called MS Drainer in Google searches and X (formerly Twitter) ads. The attack campaign uses malicious ads on Google and X to redirect users to phishing pages.

The problem is that both X and Google do not diligently filter content related to fraud. They allow these scammers to exploit search results for phishing links and other scams but users must do:

 - Avoid randomly clicking on links.
 - Use good browsers like Firefox.
 - Download ublock to block ads.

It's better to try other search engines like DuckDuckGo. I've always thought of Google as a way for scammers to snatch people's data. Despite claiming a strong security system, they don't seem to protect users well. Many folks have complained about their Google accounts being hacked, and I don't get why they still trust Google with their data. The worst part is that there's no real privacy – even the so-called incognito mode has a backdoor to save our data.

And that is why it is always good to do a background check on any superficial or ambitious advert you see out there regardless of the platform it is promoted. For me, I take it as a duty to always crosscheck any information I see and verify them via spam link checks or searching for the topic or subject of interest on the YouTube channel to see if it has been discussed and what the reputations show.

The most realistic aspect of it is that you cannot do without scammers so the best thing to do is to always do your due diligence before you begin to engage in any advert out there being it social media or mainstream media.

This is why it is advisable to use a new wallet every time you click on a link or join a campaign being promoted through ads. This is particularly happening during airdrops or when you connect your wallet to a website and the funds inside your wallet are automatically transferred to another wallet. Once you connect your wallet, this process cannot be stopped.
