Do we really need the chatbox?

I've been a little chatty in the box but no regularly. I do try to go back and read what everyone might have written since my last login, but half the time there is less than 10 new chats in there.

I also noticed that when people start asking questions in the chatbox, the admin would prefer they make a thread.

If the chatbox wasn't there, then everyone would make a thread right? Or would they just stay ignorant on whatever subject they're curious about?

What does everyone else think? It's ok but not many use it and admin has to clear it almost daily. Post opinions please

If the chatbox wasn't there, then everyone would make a thread right? Or would they just stay ignorant on whatever subject they're curious about?
I think Chatbox is a useful utility for forums.
It replaces Telegram group chat very well, everyone can directly write on it when there is an important issue and needs the fastest answer possible.

Encouraging the creation of new topics has two reasons:
1. The issue is too complex and requires detailed discussion and a lot of information. Chatbox is not the place to provide long and difficult to follow content.
2. If the issue is common, a topic can archive what the community has discussed and other members can refer to it to solve similar problems in the future.

At least, Chatbox is the fastest way that a member can interact with all members on the forum, including admin!

I am not a person who would use the chat for any serious things (discussions), but it seems to me that the chat would be more for some other things, such as some ordinary user chats like small conversations on the topic "how are we doing today", "what did you have for breakfast" or "happy birthday to a member".

Of course, this does not mean that someone cannot use the chat to write something of great importance and urgency, such as "the forum has been hacked, change your passwords".

I think the chat makes sense, but again that's just my opinion...

The chat is not really for making long discussions
It creates lag when there are a lot of chat.
You can see the chat in my opinion, as a form of community bonding and light form of support.
Not a way to get a specific opinion about something.

If there is no chat, lazy people would create a post, those less lazy would actually look for the answer

In my opinion, it is not necessary, but it is also not a bad function to have. For some short discussions, it's ok, easier than sending a PM to the admin for every little thing, for example. I got a response from him several times on the chatbox and I didn't need to open a new thread or send a PM.

I hope that by increasing the activity on the forum it will not be overcrowded with nonsense. If ten users say "Hello", or "Good morning" it will turn into a useless thing.

Chat history clears it as part of maintenance. Chatbox slows down the site a bit because it needs to be loaded completely (probably that's why regular cleaning)

Than don't put it on top of the page if you don't want people to use it all the time.
I would move it to the bottom (or to the side as hidden side menu) and set it to auto-delete every 24-48 hours.

Opps I just asked a question and I am lazy enough that I did not even search for that topic and asked for it on chat, hehe. Well, I found this method better, because that way my chat is exposed to almost every reader and the chances of getting good answers increases. Plus in this chat, we get the exact answer to our short questions even of long questions. I have asked many questions in the chat and almost you or other members replied to me in one or 2 lines.

I like this chatbox very much I even wish there was one on BTT also. I like how it is not very messy with long conversations, as it shows the most recent messages and if you are looking for the answer to your question you have to check again to see if you got any replies. This feature is awesome and it should stay forever.

I've used the chat box to catch the attention of the admin for a quick response. It can be used to expedite your request and one example of that is asking to pin a particular thread because I think it deserves to be at the top of the board.

I saw what you are trying to convey here, but please do understand that when the admin says to someone that this question is not suitable for this chat and you should create a topic then there would be 3 reasons for that.
  • The chat is for small talk only, for example, links, or to answer small questions, or saying hello and hi, etc.
  • The admin wants to increase the topics on this forum so more posts would be made there and the overall activity of this forum would increase.
  • Or he is just ignoring to answer the query but that's not a case because the admin is very supportive.

I like the chatbox feature it is quick and helpful to ask short questions, because sometimes we have to make topics for that question which is only one line long.

I think threads are what make the forum a forum and they could be referenced when something is needed to be linked or something. It makes it easier.

For me, the purpose of chatbox is just random discussions that might not necessarily need a topic but it provides an easier way to be answered quickly. Making it feel like there's actual engagement and not just posts in a forum. Maybe networking as well.

There is an option at the top to hide Altt Chat or hide some boards, and although I have hidden them, I see it as a good feature. It just deserves to be at the bottom of the main page and at the top of discussions boards, or at least there should be an option to put it at the bottom or the top.

I personally don't use that chatbox a lot but I think it's a useful tool to have some general conversation with the community. Some people don't like to send PM's to others and for those people I believe chatbox can be much useful.

We don't really need to make threads for saying hello or good morning to someone, and for such things chatbox works like a charm I guess. I think the chat box should remain as a part of this forum and it should not be removed.
