What We Should Have Learned in School But Never Did

Our current state of education is outdated and inactive. We all live in a world where access of information and knowledge is ubiquitous. The value of memorizing information to regurgitste, write exams,  pass tests and get good grades had declined. Children growing up today will actually have four jobs at same time. But currently the model if education tell us to prepare for the future that doesn't exist. If the purpose of school is to turn us into fully responsible, happy adults, it failing on many levels.There are numerous things we should have known earlier enough growing from little having this mind set of leaders of tomorrow.Thinking of what I will have done on my 23 now I would have chosen a different career.

It's funny that some of us studied marketing, business admin, and still don't know how to run a business, not even the lecturers have the practical knowledge of what they teach, that's why most people believe that school is a scam, it's not really a scam but the system is a scam

I have sometimes question/ ask questions on why we go to school from the perspective of the country we live in, and not a general point of view. It's even funny that some of our teachers can't even tell us our exact purpose of going to school. Gaining knowledge and learning how to make money are two different things. We have so many educated people today that have gone through schooling, obtained the necessary degrees, but couldn't live a quality life due to fact that certain slots are been reserved for special people. While, there are others that didn't even visit a class room, but are living better than those that are well educated. So if you ask me, I think the schooling system won't teach you how to make money, or how to face life/reality. It only fills you with so many information, that might be helpful or might not be helpful. My opinion is clearly from how the educational system in the country has been, but just as Agbe has said, "the system is a scam".

I agree with @agbe that school is not a scam, but the Nigerian system is. What makes our system like this is that most people in higher positions in our country today have that opportunity with connections, and some of them didn't take their studies seriously when they were in school. Look at our news lines now, they don't sound knowledgeable. Someone with knowledge in school won't come out to the public and tell people that a snake swallowed 36 millions of naira, How knowledgeable person think this scenario is true? Our education system is currently run by the wrong people, which is why they select the wrong people for any parastatals. As you can see, our system will continue to be a scam.

This used to be the aim of going to school but currently in most Nigeria education institutions they have changed everything - now you go to school and instead of lecturers teaching students or students learning so that they would be able to use that knowledge in their real life, they school has so much shorten the academic session to the extent that student don’t even have time to digest knowledge all they now do is to cram so that they can pass their exams.

Take for example - you go to a medical school, a semester that was supposed to run for 5 months has now being shortened to 3 months and lectures now have to give out AOCs to medical students that were supposed to be grounded in every aspect of the human body; just so that they can pass their exams. The school system that’s being experienced now isn’t after knowledge but instead they are after those that have the ability to cram and write exams.

It should have been nice if you use a different example and not medical students. The reason that I said this is because medical students are always doing practicals and the government provided them with a teaching hospital where they can improve Theo r knowledge and have the experience at the same time and this is why you see that majority of students that graduates as a medical doctor lacks job. I am cool with Agbe example because a business administration student doesn't know how to run a business neither does the lecture has any business that he is running. School is not a guarantee for a good job but it will only expose you to look for opportunities from other means outside what you studied.

Honestly our school system dey outdated  and e needs refurbishment. But to say school no good or na scam no dey correct at all at all. Countries wey person go like visit or even stay dey invest for their schools always. And schools dey drive science and technology innovation (drive civilization in short)
For those countries, people fit still say school no be am, but make we keep the difference clear and standard. Say you finish school, get job, no means say all money wahala don end there or you finish and no job no means say school no be am. The way we take finish ourselves for this country na the major problem.
To talk of waiting person for use those periods for school do no too make. What of those wey no go school, them don make money? school na just serious part of learning from kindergarten to every day realities itself.
Somehow it is obvious that rampant running desire or uncontrollable desire and being carried away by day to day hardship is the basis for comparison. I believe the relevance of schools no fit dey undermined. Make we 9ja rebuild in every  angle. Most important our politics! Wey dey produce all those failures.

Well, future does exist and we have to prepare for it in advance. If future doesn't exist then why would anyone buy and hodl Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies for long term?

Most investors also think about future when investing in an asset and similarly if the education system prepares one for future then nothing is wrong in that approach.

Well, medical student are actually doing good - the example I wanted to use was “pharmacy students”. In some schools pharmacy students are being thought courses that are supposed to take more than a month in just a week and if you want name of this school I’ll be able to provide it and all you have to do is look for student in that school to confirm it. Pharmacology that’s supposed to be their main course are being treated like nothing - lecturers don’t take time to teach students and just give them AOC.

I really don’t know about medical school but as for pharmacy I know them - that was even the reason I used medical school because I thought they would be treated the same way but then I remember after reading your post that medical school have their own calendar that quite different from normal school calendar.

Instead of focusing on memorization also known as la cram la pour, schools should have focused on critical thinking, adaptability, financial literacy, emotional intelligence and balancing, practical life skills, Creativity and entrepreneurial thinking should also have been emphasized, given the way technology is evolving really fast and more workforce is needed. The fact that many reconsider their career paths in their 20's highlights how the system is failing us in preparing for the future.

Our academic sector needs upgrade. The syllabus are outdated and nothing to write home about. No modernized value added to the system. The worst of it all is the government schools which should be the best as it is funded by the government compared to the private but the reverse is the case. The structural outlook of the schools looks dilapidated and in a very bad state. Tell me if such is the situation how do they want to upgrade to modern syllabus?

Anyways, I think vocational skills or studies should be added to the university curriculum to prepare the students after graduation because as it stands now the rate at which unemployment is in the society is alarming. These studies would help prepare them  by teaching some skill development courses and also building their capacity to be self employed and dependent on themselves.

Although it is correct to state a current education system fails to meet the needs of society at large and can be lacking in a number ways – one of them being insufficient preparation for future adversities and opportunities. The concentration can be placed too much on learning specific information or facts and not on creativity, flexibility, and budgeting. All these skills are crucial in finding a job and in balancing work and personal life as the market keeps on changing. Education should equip the students to face examinations as well as the real life and professional challenges which they encounter in their day to day activities.
 
 Besides, with the fast growth of technology knowledge, skills as creativity and entrepreneurship become crucial. Huge changes in careers and the creation of new occupations show that the education system must be improved to help teach skills for today’s societies. The situations where many people in their 20s get a second chance at choosing a job confirm the hypothesis that current education misses something to equip a person for a chaotic world of the future. Teaching all scenarios using updated curriculum that encompasses practical skills and thinking will assist the students to meet future challenges and opportunities afloat.

The people that constantly say that school is a scam end up going to school, this is not a Process that you can cheat, in order for you to be relevant and respected in society your educational background also matters. Even if the system has failed you must acquire education even if you can't afford it at least basic education is important.  Even if after going to school and you can't find a job in Nigeria you might have opportunities outside the country, don't allow the system of the country affect your mindset you must learn to think beyond where you are. Go to school, come out with good grades and be optimistic, learn physical and online skills so you can have a side hustle

It's obvious that here in Nigeria, majority don't even understand why it's important to go to school and acquire knowledge. Those who are the supposed education ministers and commissioners don't even know from their left to their right. I clearly don't see any reason why a 10/11/12 year old child, probably in j.s.s1, will be offering about 14-16 courses at that age. How do you expect that child to read such number of courses well?. Take the educational system for example, the structure is just too bad. A child runs 3 terms reading same course over and over again. I saw someone uploaded the school fees of her child in Kindergarten on social media, and it was very close to half a million. Just imagine paying such amount for a child that will still end up passing through a system that isn't well structured.

Well, there is literally nothing we can do about it, but it's very important that we acquire that degree in one way or the other. No let the government mistake vex you. Just do your part because no be only you e affect.
