Donald J. Trump has pledged to commute Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht’s life sentence to time served if he’s re-elected president.

Seeing statements like these, we might think that they are nothing more than simple electoral promises, and in fact, it is possible that they are just that. But there are some things that we must take into account, and that could make these statements more than electoral promises.

Why is he committing to freeing him now. He was president the time he was in jail, what did he do about it? Lying pants politicians will say anything at this time to get the votes of bitcioiners. I don't believe a word of what he says with regards to bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. All I smell is desperation from Trump. I do not know about his other policies whether they are good or bad but as someone in the bitcoin community, I am going to judge him and make my conclusions about based on his past record during his tenure as president. We should not be gullible, Trump isn't going to do jack for the community. If you wanna vote for him, do it based on personal reasons and not his promises to the community.

I understand that many candidates would usually promise this and that...but if you think that Ross Ulbricht is deserving to be pardoned then in between the two old men running for the White House this November - Trump and Biden, the former and the current - it is Trump that will likely do something on this subject if ever he is given another chance by the American voters...and it can be because Biden has never promised for it and we know that Biden is less friendly to the cryptocurrency industry and the players on it. At least, these libertarians would have something to demand in case Trump can be back as the 47th POTUS as one can never demand it from Biden who never promised such a thing.

Because if he would have done that at that time
- he would still have continued to be president, there was no election looming and for the next one he was leading in the polls
- if he would have done everything he promised, what could he promise now to get votes?
Populists win by promising things, if they would fix everything on their terms, they have nothing, so they need a constant problem for their raison d'etre, people don't always elect politicians based on their track record, but more the people they see fit for the new situations, see Churchill's case for example!

Honestly, as far as Ross is concerned, he was definitely sentenced to a sentence that is not appropriate (at least for me personally) for what he did. However, I think that Trump is already exaggerating a bit with all these crypto things, especially if we know what he thought about it before - and I personally don't think that he is turning into the new Saylor or something similar.

Basically that's what politics is about (in addition to causing 99% of the problems suffered by the population), telling people what they want to hear and then doing what's least convenient for them, that shouldn't surprise anyone. Trump knows that there are more cryptocurrency users in the United States every day, and logically his intention is to obtain the greatest number of votes possible in each niche, and he knows that pardoning Ross Ulbricht would be a key point on his path to the White House. Trump is well aware of the growth of cryptocurrencies in the world and will not take advantage of that growth by only accepting donations in cryptocurrencies.

Trump mad crazy and will say just about anything to get votes.  and that 40% will vote for Trump will put him back to residency.
it will be a long shot to make it happen, Ross is not even allowed to speak or being interviewed by a journalist. there must be something that the government doesn't want out from his mouth and this isn't something that Trump could just pardon.

but it will cool to see Ross out though. if there is one story to be told related to Bitcoin, its Ross version of the story.

I don't think he'll go that far (at least not now) I'm not aware of crypto groups (potential voters) that are calling for his release unlike Ross.

If we're going to be honest, he already has so many problems in his life that one more wouldn't bother him too much - if he could win over a certain number of voters to his side in that way, he might do it, but apparently his advisors haven't thought of that yet

He does everything to win and there is no doubt about it - just regardless of who wins those elections, I believe that the US will not have a president to be proud of. Obviously, it has already become a tradition for people with whom something is wrong (in every sense of the word) to be appointed to that position.

Nearly 600,000 have signed to free Ross!

That's a big number and something that Trump will contribute to gaining a lot of support, his advisers knew what industry to target to gain support.

But with Trump's record he needs to fully convinced that there's seriousness in his promises Ross could have commuted his sentence because Trump was then the President when he was convicted but he is the president back then and he needs a vote right no.
Now that's two different things.
