Wouldn't bad news make people panic and sell their coins, this reduces the demand for the coin because of panic and fear of buying. They choose to sell.

The whales is possible to dump it because they have many coins in their wallets. Moreover if there is news spreading in many social media channels that reports the whales to sell such coins because of certain reasons. This will boost the power to decline the prices of the coins quickly. However, it is true that they will dump it temporally. For the long run, it may have no significant impact anymore.
