I'm new to this....  I have 3 computers in the same room... can I run a miner app in all three and they all use the same wallet and work on the same ".dat" file?

maybe.

you can use a gpu like a 3070 or a 4070 in your pcs.

load proper software and point the cards on the three pcs o a pool like nicehash.

nicehash will pay the same address once a week or maybe once every two weeks.

from what i know mining in 3 different devices would work as long as it is connected to the same wallet address no need for it be connected to the same .dat file

just also make sure that your mining software allows for multiple devices

Yes but why would you need to, when you do that you increase the chance of losing your coins if there is any problem or unwanted access to one of the devices. Also the transaction fees are low so use a different .dat file and you can copy blockchain data.

Before asking that, can you share electricity rate? If it's above $0.1/kWh, generally you should forget about mining since usually it lead to loss.

More important than your operating system is the hardware power. Remember that you are basically "selling" your hashrate / processing power when mining.

So you need specific hardware for that: GPU for altcoins or asic for bitcoin

The number of miners around the world is increasing and to deposit a fraction they have to burn a lot of fuel and it's very expensive. In that case your computer's hardware configuration should be very modern to accumulate fraction. As far as The cost of mining should be considered in terms of coins value.

Yes, ABCbits is correct, I originally wanted to know the specifications of your PC hardware (CPU and GPU).

And you can definitely use Linux or Windows to mine crypto.
