Last time it was Binance, I actually don’t know what caused I but we all got a notification that the old deposit wallet was changed and if would no longer be used to make deposits and now I just go a notification from an exchange [CoinEx] that wallet addresses has been changed and old ones will no longer be of use.

If you’re the type that saves his/her exchange address on a notepad and then just copy from there, make sure you stop and just go to the exchange directly and get your wallet address from there and if you know the address will be used for a long time make sure you used the one from a non-custodial wallet.

I'm literally a victim of such , it was in binance though , didn't have much knowledge concerning it back then , so because of laziness I usually save my address on notepad to avoid wasting time going to the exchange to copy the address and it was faster than going to the exchange too . Put I endup depositing to the wrong address because I didn't know the address has been changed, so I waited for the funds, till I was force to go and check the address by comparing the one in the exchange and the one on my notepad doing that I figured out that the two address was literally different.

this also happened to me after sending coins to an old wallet in binance. i was waiting for it and have to login to see an alert about the deposit address.
they should really be allowing people to still credit those coins deposited to the old address. especially because wallets are sometimes given to a system for recurring payments. or maybe they should just stop generating new address for us.

i'm not sure if it happens in other exchanges but i see no complains about same kind of problem. one exchange i tried is even allowing user to generate BTC address and yet keeping those old wallets still.

Actually, Binance was a bit lenient with their change of address meaning if you made deposits with the old one you’ll have to manually make some clicks before you’ll get the money into your account. But the reason Binance decided to change their wallet addresses wasn’t because of any hack so they still had control over all their wallet addresses.

But for the case of CoinEx we don’t know if they still have control over those wallets since their reason was due to their system being hacked - if you make an error and deposit with the old address there is a probability of not seeing it again - unlike that of Binance that allowed users to go to their deposit page and redirect it back to their main account.

Before now I thought exchanges only change user addresses when the user applies for a new one. +1 for sharing, anyways though I don't use them, I haven't seen any wallet address change case with CoinEx or any other exchange recently, so I appreciate the heads up. Probably they're taking proactive steps to maintain security and infrastructure, especially with all the recent developments in the crypto space. Hopefully, the transition to new addresses goes smoothly for everyone and doesn't cause any inconvenience.

If you’re the type that saves his/her exchange address on a notepad and then just copy from there, make sure you stop and just go to the exchange directly and get your wallet address from there and if you know the address will be used for a long time make sure you used the one from a non-custodial wallet.

I think for my binance BTC deposit address, it's been the same for quite some times now. I haven't noticed it change.but then I still have to check and copy the address from the exchange before I send any funds to it. Unlike bybit where you are given an option to add new Wallet address so I just don't save any address on a notepad. Most times due to laziness a lot of people just save it on the note and copy the address from there. But it would be wiser to always check the address first on the exchange before depositing.

Binance made some changes to most of their deposit address sometime late last year. I was sent a notification as well, and I think it actually involved 40 cryptocurrencies. I believed most binance users didn't even read such message, and might have fallen victim after using the old discarded address for transaction. This is why I also think it's important for us to sometimes connect a working/active email to our exchange account, so we can get regular updates Incase any changes comes up.
Here is the link to the news I could find https://www.google.com/amp/s/bitcoinist.com/binance-crypto-deposit-addresses-stop-working/amp/

Thanks for sharing this vital information. Personally, I don't even bother copying any wallet address on a notepad or any other text editor. I just go straight to my wallet and do the copying when needed.

Yea..it happened to me also but I got back my funds manually as I was directed by Binance on how to go about making my funds sent to the old address reflect on my account, and after that time I never stored any exchange address on my gadget. It is good that whenever you want to send coins to any exchange, you copy the address from the exchange that moment before using it.

I feel they’re doing it just to protect the information of their customers and to be more secretive. It may not have a direct link to safety whatsoever but I feel the reason for those changes must have been a valid one. And if that will further engage the security of their customers funds, it’s worth doing from time to time.

If at all you don’t even plan to be exchanging your money for fiat immediately, you don’t need to be using an exchange address to receive funds. It’s better to stick to non-custodial wallets. It’s more safer and privacy more secured with complete ownership and control of funds. Long time savings require not an exchange wallet and that is the best option so far you can rely on.

And if that will further engage the security of their customers funds, it’s worth doing from time to time.

If you go through most of the articles they released concerning the change of addresses it’s usually due to attacks and they are no longer sure how safe those addresses how to hold customers funds again thus the reason for the change.

It’s better to go through the stress of changing wallet addresses even if they want to do it every two weeks than to lose your funds due to lack of security.

Re: [Reminder] Always check your deposit address before any transaction.
« Reply #10 on: September 19, 2024, 09:56:48 PM »
This is one thing I don't joke with when ever I am about to do a transaction. The wallets are always the first time I check before I approve of any transaction I am doing. Although I wrote down the wallet address of my exchange account so that I can easily do a copy and paste work to ease myself some stress of logins to check but after I read about an event or occurrences on their other platform where someone lost a huge amount of money as a result of copy paste and not confirming from his exchange wallet if it corresponds and another was a malware which was changing wallet address when ever some copy and paste in wallet address space for transaction. After I saw those posts, I decided not to make that silly mistake by deleting the wallet address from where I saved it so that I can go directly to my exchange wallet to copy from.

This mistake have cost people lots of their assets and funds but they would not come up plain to say it and many are still falling for such. We just have to be careful to always cross check our wallet address before we do any transaction to make sure we are on the right track so we don't loss anything because in some cases, the exchange would not be able to refund anything as they already sent memo to all their customers. We just have to be smart and alert.

If you’re the type that saves his/her exchange address on a notepad and then just copy from there, make sure you stop and just go to the exchange directly and get your wallet address from there and if you know the address will be used for a long time make sure you used the one from a non-custodial wallet.
Impatience is one reason why some people fail to double check the deposit address before they complete transactions. People make transactions in a hurry and may assume that the deposit address they have copied is the correct one because they've used it before. Assumptions can have terrible penalties and repercussions; we need to assume less and be more certain when making transactions and other decisions in life. Double checking of address is something you can do, it is a character you can develop and make become a part of you.

I'm curious who still needs remember to always checking centralized exchanges wallet address before using it, never have store my CEX address on a notepad for issues like this, after this was a common warning trending 2022/2023 on CEX to we their customers.

Though the fact that they choose to publicly announce it again shows there are many ignorant of this and may have even be affected by it.
One thing I have learnt is that when there was a warning about something before it's better and secure to continually put those considerations in check no matter how long it as been especially in the crypto space

Last time it was Binance, I actually don’t know what caused I but we all got a notification that the old deposit wallet was changed and if would no longer be used to make deposits and now I just go a notification from an exchange [CoinEx] that wallet addresses has been changed and old ones will no longer be of use.

When this type of update are made they sent mails to all their registered users to know about this. The people that would be mostly affected are those who aren't that active with mails or doesn't check and read emails.
For instance, there were times where I just copied my address and put on my profile without me going to my exchange to copy whenever I am making payments, but at some point I become very conscious of it since I have been reading lot of post on the forum and I wouldn't want to be a victim of such incident I started visiting exchange that I want to use their address to trade or transact.

However, I can't actually remember when last I visited this exchange as I don't like using it due to my personal reasons instead I love using binance to trade and do whatever I feels like.

Wow, checking up email is an excellent and easy way out of regrets..  I don't think such readjustment would happen without general notification via email. That being so reading emails can help stop that had I know even when still going on with copy and paste. But crossing out copy n paste na the sure bet likewise using non-custodial wallet on long term bases...
