It has been repeatedly stated that gamblers should never gamble more than they can afford to lose. I completely agree with this, but in my experience, it has not solved the problem of gambling. Losing money, no matter how small, is a bad feeling. However, the severity of the emotional distress is determined by the amount lost. Even those who gamble for fun will only be satisfied when they win. When they do not win, they still experience emotional distress.
Near Success Syndrome can make a gambler angry. When a gambler has gambled for several sessions and has near success syndrome, they may become frustrated. At this point, their frustration stems from their inability to win for an extended period of time, rather than the stakes themselves. Similarly, when a gambler patiently waits for a long shot prediction and refuses to cash out, only to lose the game, he is frustrated.
In my opinion, a gambler cannot gamble without experiencing emotional distress at some point. This may not happen frequently, depending on his level of control, but it is impossible not to feel distressed. Therefore, in my thinking, gambling with what you can afford to lose is not a cure-all for emotional distress when it comes to gambling.
