About posts that are too off topic

I have noticed several times that when a discussion reaches page 3 or more, sometimes the last post is too far off topic, even though it is still connected to the previous post... however, when it no longer refers to the main topic, it is still called "off topic"

What can I do if I find out this (posts from other people that are too far off topic) happens again in the future?

If the comments are relevant to the OP or in the continuing discussion is not off topic but when the discussion reach more number of pages we can see lot of repetitive comments which are redundant still people do comment. Just ignoring them is what we can do or can use negative karma if the user is doing that very often and also can contact the thread creator to lock the thread since the purpose of thread is attained.

The best advise to do is to either report such off topic post to the moderator or you inform the OP by quoting the content to that post for him on the same thread or sending him a PM regarding what he has posted wrong, am sure we make mistakes a times being unaware of it, but when we see someone to quickly correct us, we accept such in good terms and make change.

I guess, you can just quote the post then reply that they are being off topic so no one will reply again to continue the off topic discussion within the discussion. If someone continues, report it to the moderator using the report button.

i always encourage discussions here we all know that this forum needs more activity so i don’t think being too strict will do that any favor 3 pages is not that many imo a post can reach more than 3 pages and still stay on topic maybe that topic really is broad someone has questions and etc etc

as long as there is still some connection to the original post then i think it is okay

if in the occurrence that the last post is way wayy far off from the original topic then maybe you can ask for that post to be locked there is no other way really

It depends on the account, is this a habit or is it due to a paid signature or misunderstanding @OP, if the account is spamming then reporting the post is necessary, otherwise a private message may solve the problem.

I suppose to some extent it is normal that after many posts and several pages, the current conversation has taken different directions from the original post, but as long as the "general" topic is the same there is no problem. Otherwise, as you have been told previously, you will only have to use the report button if you think it is necessary. The moderator will know what decision to make with those posts.

Off-topic posts that are not related to the discussion in the op should be reported to the moderator, just use the button and let the moderator decide if it should be deleted or not. Users should also refrain from posting in threads that have run its full course, except there's new information to be added.

I think you should report those posts to the moderators, and if they find it off-topic like too far off-topic then your report will be a success. Otherwise, I don't think anything can be done hmm yeah you can mention them and ask them to remain On-topic. BTW first page seems not too much off-topic because the people there have shared their POVS already.

People on the 4th or 3rd page are sharing the same POVs seems off-topic but I also saw few posts on mega threads that they were just repeating the safe stuff over and over again that was not off-topic but totally unnecessary.

Are there any specific consequences for the reporter? For example, the moderator decides that the post is still related to the topic, while from the reporter's perspective, it is already off-topic... will the reporter be punished for reporting something inappropriate? Sometimes I am a little hesitant, because everyone has their own perspective in assessing posts...

In fact, you answered yourself. There will never be a sanction or a "punishment" for the person who reports a post, since as you say, we all think and have very different perspectives, and that logically is not a reason to sanction a user. When you think a post is too off topic, report it, the moderator will decide what to do. And don't worry, whatever the moderator's decision, there will be no problem for the user who reports the post.

I will add if I reply to a post and there is an off topic post:

-I will put a word like "off topic" at the beginning of the post to reply.
-I will put <->Horizontal Rule<-> to separate on topic and off topic replies.

I often see both of these additions from all senior members such as Legendary, Staff and Moderators. This only advice and this is only my experience.

It's quite difficult because of what you've said, different perspectives

Another thing that I find difficult to analyze is that someone can make a comment in a thread, and perhaps have a doubt or question that may be a bit offtopic, but it's not worth creating a new thread just for that, and it's better to make a post

Of course there are some comments that are very offtopic or spam, and you can report them to the moderator
I think a good thing to consider is the user as well, if that user always does this or not

Anyway, this thread has a lot of interpretation and it's good to discuss

I thought of this as well, but from my own side of view, i will see it as more important that we either avoid any thread we see there's no need of spamming it up together with others posting there, another thing to do is if we can manage to report the thread to the moderator for proper action against any off topic post or the thread itself, one thing i only noticed here is that threads don't normally get locked often as expected

Have you ever report post on BTT? Why would someone punish you if you have your own opinion on something, even if they disagree with you?

If you hesitate all the time to do something, in the end you will do nothing.
