Yes of course. To buy and hold altcoins is the best thing to do for now because of slow price movement. We cannot get good profits if we try to sell our coins during bear market like this.

I myself also focus on bitcoin to invest when one can hold the asset as best as possible then a success can be realized in the future without having to panic with the various bad issues in circulation.

Firstly, you need to do your research by checking out the various threads in this forum, google, youtube etc which would help you find the answers to the questions which you specified since all of them have been answered many times before. I would recommend investing into the popular coins like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, Litecoin etc which will most likely help you earn healthy returns in the short term.
