The traditional gambling house was originated in the 17th century as Venice as you said but there are many proof available that gambling was followed by the human kind for very long and it will be atleast since 3000BC, because dice made of bones found from the time period.

About the experience, it was good because everything gives good feel when we try for first time but I don't find that needs to be done regularly which keeps me away from addiction.
