In present day Nigeria so many graduates are whereas Nigerians with skills are able to battle and face the present economic reality. I have seen regrets lament that they would have learnt a skill instead of wasting five years in the university.

As a parent would you rather send your wards to the university or you would prefer they learn a skill or will they learn a skill before going to the university?

I do consider my university years waste of time and finances.

Despite this, if I were to say from a perspective of parent, I would still probably fall for bait and let my kid go to uni for degree, thinking the degree might be somehow helpful for the kid in future.

It's the student's decision that the parents will have to consider whether he wants to go to a university or not.
You force a son or daughter to decide which degree then he may not be ready for it.

The issue with parents is that they want their sons and daughters to grow up and inherit the profession they have.
It's the culture in the past, the future is that our kids have preferences.

finishing school and getting a degree is such an achievement and any parent would be happy to see their son or daughter get a degree the pride you feel when you watch your child graduate is such an indescribable experience and a degree is never always useless so i would want my child to have both

i teach my children skills needed for life for practicality even before they go to college so that they are ready to face the world when they enter the university

Education does not prevent individuals from learning a skill. I would rather sponsor my children's education than enroll them in a skill-learning program. However, the fact that there is always a break in school, those breaks can be used to learn a skill because I understand the importance of a skill in our current society, but just because skills matter does not mean that I will choose skill over education.

There are so many things that education exposes you to, and I want my children to have that exposure so that they can always reason rationally. Let me also bring to our attention that some universities offer skill programs outside of one's field of study, and students are required to enroll in at least one of those skills before graduating. So, education doesn't deprive any one from learning a skill.

Combining both, going to the university for the degree and also learning a skill, so that they will gain from both sides, than having one, while in the long run, they will need the other. Why then combine both, to use a stone to kill two birds rather than spending years for this, to later spend another year for another?

I have planned this(statement mentioned above), how my children are going to live their lives during their university days. They are not going to focus for years only on a university degree, without thinking about a skill to learn

for my own opinion i will like my child to learn a skill before going to school,not coming out from school going to enquire skill,the mistake i made will be corrected,because the child can also use that skills to support his/her education atleast to assist the parents.

I'm deeply moved and disheartened by the reality you've shared. Many graduates struggle to secure better jobs, leading to widespread discouragement. Some individuals have lost faith in the education system and are hesitant to pursue further education. Even parents are skeptical about investing in their children's education, viewing it as a potential scam due to the disappointing outcomes. many people invest heavily in education, hoping to reap financial rewards after graduation, only to feel disappointed and disillusioned.

For me as long as I can provide I will take my children to go to university to earn a degree because education is very important because the children can learn the skills based on their wanted profession.

I prefer to acquire skill rather than spending another for years in a university as far as I know it will only take me 6 months to get a certificate in a specific skill from technical vocational schools. The advantage of this is you don't spend much on the skill you wanted, it also save you time and skilled workers are now in demand locally and overseas.

But don't you think the students are young and needs a lot of guidance? The students might be too young to decide for themselves

The graduation certificate means nothing anymore, the companies hire candidates based on their skills especially problem solving skills but some companies do have degree as the qualification for apply so at the moment we can't say anything for sure about how things will work in future.

But in my assumption the first priority will be given to the best skilled candidate than who got more degrees if they apply for a job.

I don't care about the present situation of the economy. My child will go to school and if there is a place higher than university, they are going to attend it because there opportunities doesn't end in Nigeria, they can end up anywhere in different part of the world, they can become who they want to be in another country even if they study in Nigeria.

What you should know is that opportunity doesn't end in one place and because people are finding it difficult to make something after school doesn't mean your children wouldn't make the opportunity. As long as the economy is working, there is definitely a place for you to be fixed.
