As a parent would you rather send your wards to the university or you would prefer they learn a skill or will they learn a skill before going to the university?

finishing school and getting a degree is such an achievement and any parent would be happy to see their son or daughter get a degree the pride you feel when you watch your child graduate is such an indescribable experience and a degree is never always useless so i would want my child to have both

i teach my children skills needed for life for practicality even before they go to college so that they are ready to face the world when they enter the university

Actually, I think that you could express a best opinion in your comment. Because I am also agree with your prefer comment. Because we know that every parents must be want to educate there child to renowned university for there study. Because we know that university will be very helpful for acquire knowledge of all over the world. We also know that university will be very helpful for there skill. So I also wish that university will be best prefer place for our children.

I agree. Getting a degree is a great achievement every parent would be proud to see their child graduate. However, I also believe that learning practical life skills before university is just as important. It makes kids more independent and ready for real-world challenges. Having both education and skills is the best combination for success.

The issue with parents is that they want their sons and daughters to grow up and inherit the profession they have.

It depends on how the kid will look at the situation, the kid would either see the parents being too controlling or he being an obedient kid. To me i would give them freedom of what degree they want to achieve. Everyone has to go to school but they have to decide for themselves. If they are yet undecided, then it might not be a good idea to go university yet.

Well at least this is what my parents did to me. After a year, I still end up going to college though.

There are many types of efficiency from outside life in the university. There are many students in my country who play a role in various career during the university. That is a good plan, but as you know, jack of all trades, master of none. I would rather my child learn a specific skill and progress in that skill. The world recognises experts. Anyone who is an expert in any craft will be patronized. Individuals are not afraid to spend money if they know they will get value for their money.

So, for example, if a kid is good at barbering, he can make money from it as long as he becomes an expert, which will draw people from far and wide to get their hair cut because they know he can give them a good cut. With this, there is no need for such a person to enroll in other skills, as he may end up sharing attention.

In present day Nigeria so many graduates are whereas Nigerians with skills are able to battle and face the present economic reality. I have seen regrets lament that they would have learnt a skill instead of wasting five years in the university.

This has been a system that we all grew up to meet and continued with it. It has not been changed , and any parent who wants to try something new of not following the former method, they'll have themselves to blame if the child ends up not having a good job. But the few that succeeded without degree are termed to be luck, funny...

Skill is now much important than university degrees. Cause the university degree will only end up giving you a job, of repetition routine, not having time for yourself or for other things. But with skills, you are needed based on your time for your services.

I think the issue of doing this is that some people don't know how exactly to grow their skills and reach more audiences if your skills are so niche. How can you promote your barbering skills? How can you get famous people as your clients? It's not like a barber can suddenly get a major client through dumb luck or whatever. If everything goes well then we can say we make the right decision, but not many people have the choice to do that if their family depends on them, they don't have the capital to do so, etc. It would be amazing if the government offered some options to help people learn high-level skills, but as always it's a pipe dream for people in underdeveloped countries. Doing both at the same time, that is schooling and learning a skill. I can't have my kids focusing on one, leaving the other one aside, when I actually know that both are very important in today's society. I will make sure I will help them to find means to do both at the same time if possible.

It starts with the good cut and everything else could follow. It greatly helps if the barber also has good communication and marketing skills that comes with his barbering. With the two other skills, he could build networks/connections in the neighborhood and eventually outside (if possible). There's a course for those two in a university but I guess you don't need to spend thousands to develop it.

A good parent should understand that the child needs to be educated and at the same time to go for skills development, this will help him to have more open expositions to several opportunities in life, including his career when he grew up, there is no knowledge learnt that is a waste, if he don't make use them now, it will later have a demand for, in the future opportunities that may be presented.

unfortunately some parents are incapable of providing their kids such quality care that they tend to highlight the importance of what they have and what they can give instead of trying to give more yes it is quite unfortunate but it’s the truth that lots of kids aren’t able to finish school due to lack of resources and are forced to learn most skills instead

There are some skills that cannot be coupled with your studies, and coding is one of them. They also require a lot of space and dedication. I've always believed that gaining the essential in-demand skills first before going to university. To prevent your children from jobs hunting after university, provide them with a good basic education, expose them to skills, and allow them to earn money before university

If it can't be done at the same time, you should prioritize one of them. If your focus on the college certificates, you should go to university first. But if you focus on getting a job immediately, it is better to choose learning skills. I don't think it is too complicated, we should prioritize the most important one.

In our present world, degree means little to companies; they are more interested in what you can provide, and most degree holders offer nothing these days, so they mostly go for the ones with skills now.

Yep, it is not a big matter for company but it is a crucial matter if you apply for a job in the government sector. Also, degree won't be a very important matter if you make your own business.

This can only be achieved if someone is well off because we all know going to a  university and at the same time aquiring special skills isn't free for other places and if it was then your only problem this time is time management. Really up to one specific kid who can do that without any problem and he or she will surely be successful one day.

It depends on the chosen profession, for example, if you choose medicine, it is mandatory to take the course at a university. At least here in Brazil that is how it works!
