The Newly Proposed System of Education

Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, has proposed a new educational system that would replace the current 9-3-4 system with a 12-4 structure. In my opinion, the issue with our educational system is not the way it is currently structured.

It would have been preferable to revise the curriculum to make way for agricultural programs, skill development, and technological advancement and not the structure itself.

We currently lack effective teachers, and it would have been more meaningful to hire better brains to teach rather than changing the educational system, because, at the end of the day, what changes is the structure of the educational system, not the problems within it.

What are your thoughts on the proposed educational system?

Frankly speaking the educational system is really messed up ranging from most especially public schools to even private schools. It's more as if interchanging or adjusting study time wouldn't really do much. This is basically because they are bigger problems to be fixed than just study time in schools.

If I can remember correctly back then during the pandemic I think or shortly after it was over , I believe there was an adjustment in schooling hours but it didn't seem to last long either.

Just like you said changing the educational system won't will effect more change in the education sector rather there are so many other things that they are supposed to look into in the educational sector, like equipping some of the school, recruiting more teachers

The educational  system in the country already collapsed long ago begging for revival. I think the structure is not the problem but the system itself. How is the process going on that matters. If you have ever taken time to go round the schools in the country including the tertiary institutions, you will know that the educational sector is far behind and still dueling in the past.


These days People see schools as a means of making profit and they just build houses to accommodate pupils without having the necessary and basic requirements for a certified academic institution. Most of the schools do not even have lab and do not really have any means of conducting practical classes for their pupils, funny enough some of them go outside the school premises for their practicals putting the life of their students in danger.

I think the educational sector should be up and doing and not compromise their standards because that is were the problem emanates from. Any school below Standard should be asked to do the needful and the agency responsible for that should be disciplined to carrying out their duties as enacted by the law.

The most concerning aspect is that the poor state of our educational system is visible to everyone, including policymakers, but nothing is done to change the narrative because most of the owners of these schools pay bribes just to obtain a license to operate, and as a result, the school's standards are ignored.

Teachers who have no knowledge of a subject are told to teach it, and the students are left with nothing because the teacher has nothing to offer. During public exams, experts are hired to write the exams for the students. This is why students with an A1 in mathematics may struggle to solve basic arithmetic problems. This demonstrates how rotten the educational system is from within.

In my own taught of view i see the government are not really working with a better ideas from there advisers,they always comes up with lost ideas,they are changing the educational system again when we lack teachers,the government should lift employment bans and recruit more teachers.

The problem of Nigeria is that we like to run away from the main issues affecting us as a problem because the problem with the Nigerian educational system is not about structure or even curriculum but government has not made enough investment when it comes to education development in the country primarily education in public schools is almost dead if not because new teachers are not been employed or training of any sort to equip teachers in the secondary school levels there is no practicality of what students are being taught as both the science and art is just theory based so even if the government increases the numbers of years by students in our primary and secondary school's without proper investments in the educational sector little or nothing is going to change about it because changing the structure is nothing

Exactly, the structure of our educational system is not the main problem. The Nigerian educational system faces various challenges due to inadequate funding, insufficient salaries for teachers, and a lack of well trained teachers. These issues lead to teachers being less motivated, resulting in below standard education for students. the scarcity of essential school equipment and facilities also affect the learning process. To address these challenges, the Minister of Education should focus on providing the necessary resources, equipment, and facilities to improve the educational system, rather than focusing on the educational structure, This also includes increasing teacher's salaries to motivate them to deliver quality education. By doing so, teachers will be more serious about their work, and students will benefit from a better learning environment.

It is very important to recognize that reducing the educational structure is not a viable solution, because it may only increase the existing problems. Instead, the government should prioritize investing in education, as it is crucial for the development of future leaders and the country's growth, and These children are the leaders of tomorrow so it is important to train them well.

This current so called educational model that is been proposed by the government is coming on the hills by the government some time ago when they proposed that only students who are up to eighteen years and above can write and go to the university since that move failed due to criticism from different quatres they abandon that move and has come up with this educational model but still yet this proposed educational model will not help the educational sector in Nigeria because our educational problem is not about structure and if anyone is to be blamed for the failure of the education in the country it's government itself because they have not prioritized education in the country when politicians children will be going to school in the country especially in public schools that is when Nigerian educational system will begin to change for better

What do you expect from the policy makers when their children are all schooling abroad, they are not bothered with what is going on in the public and most private schools because some of them are not concerned about it all they are is to get allocation and share amongst themselves. The agencies established to oversee all these defects in the schools are corrupt and have been compromised fromtheir standards. The other day I was at a restaurant with a friend when some health workers walked in, they met the restaurant owners and they introduced themselves and the next thing I saw was that the restaurant owner asked them to sit and they fed them and after which, they went into the office came out smiling and laughing and they did not carry out any inspection exercise they just left and this is what happens in the schools with nobody to hold accountable.

It is obvious that things have gone wrong and begging for a correctional measures which no one has summon up cpoutage to take the lead in addressing because doing such is like one attracting swam of bees to themselves which would not go down well with them so the best they could do is just to allow the process continue till the right time comes and maybe by then it might be too late or would cost a lot tobe corrected.

   I think this is one issue the Nigeria goverment have while making certain decisions concerning issues we face.
    Instead of changing these time structures,wouldn’t it have been better if they look into the more inherent problems our educational sector face rather than decisions like this?and this continues going on and on.our government can so better.

Nice observation! Every country seeking growth must revise its curriculum to reflect societal changes and global relevance, but as you mentioned, the educational system has been revolving around the same things.

No adjustments are made, which goes a long way toward determining the level of contribution the individuals will make to society because the individual is a product of his educational system and will always give back what he has learned from it.

What this means is that if nothing relevant is instilled, the individual will not make a meaningful contribution.

Nice observation! Every country seeking growth must revise its curriculum to reflect societal changes and global relevance, but as you mentioned, the educational system has been revolving around the same things.

No adjustments are made, which goes a long way toward determining the level of contribution the individuals will make to society because the individual is a product of his educational system and will always give back what he has learned from it.

What this means is that if nothing relevant is instilled, the individual will not make a meaningful contribution.

Education should be structured following modern-day advancement and development as it is that there is always a change in trends which should be in line with societal values and innovations to match up with the desired goal as expected in the society. It should be very focused on global relevance so that the new crop of students can stand tall and match others to make good contributions based on the knowledge gained through teachings and also render solutions to challenges as it bothers the society.

What are your thoughts on the proposed educational system?

This doesn't have any different from the way they changed our national anthem with an outdated one that doesn't address any of our issues, so I don't think this structure will help our educational system in any way. Nigeria's educational system is extremely poor, if you visit some schools, you'll notice that their libraries and labs aren't even operating anymore, and there aren't even high-quality learning resources available for students. So where is the government jumping to if they can handle all of this first?
