Silence means consent?
« on: February 13, 2025, 11:31:23 AM »
I realized that I had been messaging a married man who was a colleague late at night regarding work.

One day, he brought my attention to the timing of my messages and mentioned that he didn’t appreciate receiving them at such late hours.

At first, I felt a bit offended because, after all, I was working, as he was to be approving content I write and since I usually respond to messages at night due to my schedule, I didn't think much of it. But as I thought about it, my respect for him increased. Now, this is what it means to set boundaries, I said to myself.

I couldn’t know what conversations he might have had with his wife. What if she saw my messages and felt uncomfortable seeing another woman texting her husband at odd hours, even if it was work-related?
There was a time when I was afraid to tell people no, even when I wasn’t comfortable with something.

Some of us struggle with being firm, fearing that setting boundaries will push people away—even when we keep getting hurt in the process.

But setting boundaries means:
 • It’s not everywhere you should go.
 • Not everyone should have the same level of access to your space.
 • Not everyone is your friend.
 • It’s not everyone you should follow on social media.
 • As a believer, there are places you shouldn’t be and conversations you shouldn’t engage in or entertain.
 • Boundaries mean leaving relationships and friendships where you are constantly disrespected and not valued.

When you fail to set clear boundaries, you unintentionally teach others—and yourself—that certain behaviors or situations are acceptable, even when they make you uncomfortable or cause harm.

Every time you allow something that goes against your principles or well-being, you open the door for it to happen again.
“Silence means consent.”
What you tolerate more than once will inevitably repeat itself, Learn to say NO.

Respect is earned and not given and setting boundary is one of the ways that someone can earn it.

Silence is the absence of surrounded audible words and the emission of the sound of such low intensity that they do not draw attention to themselves, or the condition of stopping the words. This last meaning can be extended to extend to the end or absence of any form of communication, whether it is through speech or other. From silence you will find the right way and the right problem. In most cases and this is more noticeable among intelligent people.

Setting boundaries with colleagues, friends and even family members are important, we can't be available to everyone at every moment. It doesn't mean we should not help them, surely we should be giving hands whenever they are in difficult situations but don't expect to be there always.

We must have the ability of reading on peoples mind, some silence could mean a lot of information being communicated, its now left for the person involved to be able to read the mind of the other person, some people may not have to express themselves to you, but their silence mean a lot, so don't just yet on action received without you reading on the meaning of it, we should not also neglect for that, because it mean we are not sensitive enough to understand what the meaning reads on us.

No does not always have to be the answer, but setting boundaries is. No does not have to be the word that accompanies setting boundaries.

Yes, I have been there. I also have hard time saying — no, and if I try to change this and I say no, I tend to feel guilty. It sucks.

Lol, I don't like to talk much, and I stay silent and people assume things on their own which are often incorrect.

silence means agreement "a word that is difficult to interpret because basically silence has many meanings, and usually silence is a simple thing to end a debate, not to agree on something
Not everyone likes to argue or barter words with others, so when a simple discussion starts turning into an argument, rather than continuing in that discussion, they’d just simply remain silent when the argument comes to their court in order not to further prolong the argument, so not all silence really means consent.

Setting boundaries is about respect, not rudeness. If you don’t set limits, people will keep crossing them. Saying "no" protects your peace, time, and well-being. What you allow will continue, so don’t be afraid to stand your ground.
Totally agree on this one, the wrong thing about other people is that they do let other people do cross with those limits even if its really that against their comfort zone and just trying it out to be silent because they dont want for someone to get offended or whatever possible reactions they could have, but actually the solution is simple is that sometimes we do make use of our common sense on which even if things are work related but it turned out that you do send late at night then you cant be able to avoid someone not to think up something.
