I really don't think so. The reason I believe Ethereum is still at the top is because it was one of the first altcoins to gain so much popularity that it became the top coin. In it's era and quickly grew in price too. Other altcoins are still way behind ETH if you compare prices.

Aside from this I'm of the opinion the ethereum is underperforming. The network isn't fit to have an unlimited supply as that I believe is part of the reasons why its price is depreciating too.

Well, market will sometimes deviate from the trends, Etheruem started on a good note, but the market factors will not remain the same, demands and other factors are bound to change which subsequently will change the price overtimes.
Moreover, it is quite disappointing on the current performances of Etheruem since late 2024 when Bitcoin was pumping unfortunately, Etheruem showed no strength through out the Bitcoin rally to it's new All Time High. Earlier this year 2025, it also failed to make any tangible moves.
Nevertheless, Etheruem is a solid project, hopefully it will bounce back especially during the much anticipated altcoins season.

How many "continuous increase in demand" does Etheruem have to get before it can break pass $5K?. The last heavy bullish move that started in November last year, was so strong that even other competitors like Sol and Ton surged tremendously. So many altcoins and memecoin did exceptionally well for themselves, some of them even making a new ATH, but Etheruem just failed to replicate the same thing even with the momentum.

This season the overall price increase of Altcoin is not as expected by many people, not only Ethereum but also other Altcoins. And we all still hope that there will be an Altcoin season in 2025, a very long wait after Bitcoin reached its new ATH. And I am still very optimistic that Ethereum will reach a new ATH, although many people are also doubtful.
