Where I mostly look out for, when investing in altcoin is how long have it stayed in the market. Have it experience the bear market, how did it survive it. Not all altcoin have I seen that come out strong when face the bear market to enter the bull  market. Many altcoins have diminish in price after the witnessing the bear market, before the bull run comes.

Is a wise thing you do because altcoin is not were somebody will just invest without doing what you did, so actually is from the findings it will either motivate you to invest on it or you will even realize something you would have regretted if you had invested without any research about them. The time they became on a existence is part of important factors because that's the only way you will have all the things assemble about them, but when is not long they came into the market there wouldn't be any concrete evidence as to weather they can survive the market pressure.

No matter the research that you do altcoins remains shitcoins because their price value depreciates drastically and only pump very little. An old coin isn't a guarantee that the coin will be profitable in the long term. Take example of Etherum, the prucw has been annoying compared go what it was initially. Etherum can't pump higher than its previous ATH.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to distinguish which altcoins will become shit coins and which ones will not, if it is done before listing and even more recently pre-sale, unless it is done by a top exchange or a top public igure, that alone does not guarantee it.

If it is a matter of whitepaper and also concept, hmm, it does not guarantee it either, because even if we think the analysis is quite good with a good concept, but the name of the Whitepaper can be made as good as possible, but the reality is very far. This means, if you want to invest in new coins, it is better to do it little by little and not all-in because the risk is very high

I think what you said could be true because you yourself may have experienced something unpleasant with investments made in altcoins, but there may be others who also did the same as you but enjoyed good results, so it is indeed difficult to be certain about altcoins.
But I strongly agree that it is not good to hold altcoins for a long time because they are very unstable and there is a possibility of loss, like you said about ethereum, which is currently not doing well because of the very deep correction until now.
