Reddit blocks access to VPN users

Just like facebook, Reddit prefers to block you from viewing a page if you are using VPN, unless you login.
So if they can not collect data based on ip or based on logged in user, they prefer not to let you see content on their site.

Right now and am sure into the future, data is always considered like a currency and this is the founding pillar of many social media sites especially on making money. The more data they can collect, the more money they can make. Now, the battle is going to be when privacy collides with data collection as these platforms are exerting all the necessary effort they can make to collect data from their users. Hence, if a user is not contributing to their data collection, that user is worthless and therefore has to be blocked.

Not a coincidence and that's how these platforms evolve and harvest data from us that will be sold. Remember we are the product of these social media so we will be considered not useful when they can't identify and profile us that will be injected into ad programs which will show us the personalized ads.

The Internet started as a tool to share knowledge and data but now it all going in the way of personal profiling by invading our privacy.

So users from my country is now kind of fucked up. Reddit is already banned in my country (banned by the government due to NSFW content). I am not sure if they thought it's a porn website, because there are hundreds of dumb workers on the government agencies who has only basic understanding about the internet. They banned Reddit about a year ago or so.

Now, to access Reddit, we have to VPN for sure. If Reddit does now allow VPN users to access their contents, then a lot of people are going to get fucked up. I hate how these people collect our data and sell it as a product.

Ohh buddy, Reddit is more than a porn site, it is a place where you can find sharing things that a normal person wouldn't even fantasized about and it's the soft version of OF too but that's what I like about it.

Not everything is as black as you think, because as @admin wrote, Reddit sometimes blocks a user using a VPN from viewing the content, but you can still log into your account and see all the content even if you use a VPN. As an alternative, you can also try Tor, because you get an even greater dose of anonymity as a guest, and Reddit even has its own official onion address.

They are not even allowing browsing their website with VPN, even if you are not logged in, and alternatives like Redlib are having more and more problems.
Maybe they are soon going to facebook route and not allow even regular reading of reddit posts if we are not logged it, and that sounds crazy to me.

You still can create an account with VPN, right? So at the end of the day it's still usable with full privacy. Connect tp vpn -> create throwaway account -> login and use it. Just a few extra steps and you can use a temp throwaway email for that. Hopefully they don't start forcing sms phone number verifications any time soon.

Apart from these things, Reddit contains millions of useful pieces of content that we can use. If the government blocks the entire website just because of some pages, that does not look good. For example, let's say some X accounts share 18+ contents, but that does not mean the entire X should be considered NSFW. What do you think about it?

If people knew Tor existed, they might use it a lot more - because I think I even posted a link earlier that shows the relatively small number of people using it compared to the total number of internet users. Maybe the problem is that surfing with Tor can be quite slow, although I don't have such experience on the desktop version, the situation is completely different on the mobile version.

And sometimes as a TOR user, they would have to change the bridge connection every time. I have my experience on BTT that it prompts me not connected anymore if my browsing is idle.

One solution I could add is to use VPN or TOR to register an account if possible. With this I guess there is no data to collect from you are a new user with an IP somewhere else.

I use Reddit pretty often, but this VPN issue rarely occurs for me (sometimes I log in, sometimes not)... Perhaps it's based on IP, so if a VPN server is blocked, you can always switch to a new one.

Reddit is mostly a non-issue for me; however, I do agree that more websites cannot be accessed with a VPN, mostly Nginx ones, from my experience.

I knew they are going to add more restrictions a while ago when they stopped allowed third party services to use their API.

Hopefully they don't start forcing sms phone number verifications any time soon.

I would never use my real phone number connected with reddit, but there are also option to use temp SMS numbers or buy numbers with crypto.

Could be AB testing. See if the block is enough to make people give out on using reddit or if they just will just disable it, basically doing what they want you to do.

But I've noticed that Reddit sometimes ask for login to read even without VPN, not sure how this is related.

It's not like people don't know about Tor. I guess a lot of people know about Tor, but they don't use it because Tor sometimes works pretty slowly. People love to save their login history in their browser so they don't have to enter the URL or login credentials every time. Also, there might be several other reasons why people prefer regular browsers.

Yeah, the number of TOR users is too low compared to the number of total internet users. That is probably because of what I mentioned above. I also agree that a good number of people don't know about TOR.
