Can the judge issue a sentence that's more than the maximum? As I understand from the article, he could be jailed for up to 30 years only or is that per charge? The victims should probably go to their lawmakers to propose changes to laws against these crimes.

Madoff was sentenced to 150 years because he was found guilty of 11 felonies, security,mail,bank fraud, money laundering, perjury ,and whatever else was there, Mashinsky has pleaded guilty for the two felonies so at maximum he will receive something like 30 years but probably it will be something between 10 and 20 years.
