Two recently published patent applications from Microsoft suggest that the software giant is considering the use of reliable execution environments or TEE in the use of blockchain.
But what is a TEE? According to information gathered from two applications published Thursday at the U.S. patent and trademark office (USPTO), TEE is described as storing "a pre-defined type of blockchain or other security Protocol code in a verification node."
With this kind of data, "TEE attestation" can validate system members that have matching information stored in the block chain node. In blockchain, a node is simply a connection point capable of receiving, storing, and sending data on the network.
And how all this can be useful is explained in two ways.
First, TEE can help create a "consortium chain network". By configuring the first node of the blockchain to store "pre-defined list of participants," among other pieces of information, at the same time, "certification TEE can be used to secure the inclusion of members of the network consortium".
Second, the "TEE may also help in the verification of the transaction in the same network that should communicate a few pre-authorized objects. For example, again using this attestation process via programmed TEE, some encrypted transactions on the network can be processed and confirmed directly in the blockchain's official state without the need for decryption."
The patent says:
In some instances the entire network accepts the transaction, including the transaction in the blockchain codes, and the state of the blockchain directly updated. In some examples, you do not need to copy the transaction to confirm the block. In addition to these two use cases, both applications also mention the TEE attestation process in the context of the Confidential consortium (COCO) Structured blockchain, which could potentially allow more complex verification systems requiring consensus of multiple nodes.
Although these applications were submitted by the licensing division of the company back in June last year, Microsoft has since started to push applications with binding through its Azure platform. This month, it was announced that Microsoft has updated additional features for the product specifically for customers working with public blockchains such as Ethereum.
