According to a new report from Kaspersky Lab, cybercriminals earned more than $ 2.3 million in cryptocurrency fraud in the second quarter of 2018.

In its "Spam and phishing" report for the 2nd quarter of 2018, the company reported that it has saved nearly 60 ' 000 users from visiting fraudulent web pages imitating popular wallets and cryptocurrency exchanges from April to June 2018. The lab claims that the attackers are making money by encouraging their victims to send their cryptocurrency in exchange for distributing ICO tokens.

And it's not just symbolic sales. As previously reported, malicious sites disguised as popular cryptocurrency services also collect their potential victims.

Nadezhda Demidova, a leading analyst of web content in Kaspersky Lab, wrote in a press release:

The persistence of attacks targeting financial institutions reflects the fact that more and more people are using electronic money. However, not all of them are sufficiently aware of the possible risks, so attackers are actively trying to steal sensitive information through phishing.

The Lab report also reflects a broader view of the situation - the greatest activity of phishing attacks in the global coverage is observed in South America and Asia. Brazil alone accounted for 15.51% of all phishing attacks during this period. China shared the second position with Georgia (14.44%), followed by Kyrgyzstan (13.6%) and Russia (13.27%).
