When relatively new to the crypto industry I struggled to find my feet. Knowing no-one who had dipped their toe in, I had to teach myself via Google by trawling though site after site and through article after article.
What resources helped you to learn the ropes, stopped you from getting ripped-off, made things easier and less time consuming?

Forums are - in my opinion - the best source for information.

Websites which claim to be for newbies often have very little information and only want you to sign up for all kinds of of other websites, where they get the most commission.

Books are very almost always outdated, as things are moving fast in the crypto currency world.

I tend to agree. It wasn't until I found the forums that I felt I had my finger on the pulse.

I just found this article (not authored by me) which mentions a reasonably good collection of sites that would have definitely helped me to consolidate my learning much earlier than I did. (There are no active links in article so you'd have to google each entry).

https://www.tokens24.com/cryptopedia/the-ultimate-list-of-ico-resources/

Hope this helps those starting out...

If I had a chance to start over again, THE very first place I would sign up is at QoinPro:

https://qoinpro.com/72514888d80a704bb93f218b0d11592f

It does free deposits of 18 different coins/tokens on a daily basis; NO EXTRA WORK NEEDED, they are automatically added. Another 5 coin types are unlocked over the space of a month bringing the total to 23 bonuses daily.
The ability to withdraw coins has been confirmed.
Some good ones too such as Bitcoin, Litecoin, Neo, Doge, Dash.
Although they may be only fractional deposits they will accumulate...hey, it just might be that one of the lesser known cryptos here suddenly takes off. Worth a punt anyway IMO.

It is hard to find good centralised resources of information that are also up to date. One place I found useful was https://cryptopanic.com/. It's a an aggregator and a great way to get caught up on the latest crypto news, including business, political, and economic. It also often includes links to forum discussions.

After reading all the wiki articles I started diving into the news sites to get a non technical overview of what was happening and some more comprehensive guides. For the technical perspective the Germany talks at the CCC conferences helped me.

The forums are great, but I like YouTube channels. There's a few worth checking out. DataDash, Chris Dunne, Altcoin Buzz are all decent channels. Good for the basics and also posting regular opinion based videos.

I started on twitter. It is not the conventional way but I found some good crypto personalities that were helpful and also got some of their free e-books about cryptocurrency trading.

Do not ever stick with one place. Even top news sites right now have a price for their articles, so your best option will be DIY way.  My resources are a mix of forums and honest Telegram groups + a proper google search. And every article published on big news site I always recheck if it is legit or not.

I was a bit lucky when I started because I had a few friends who were already ahead of me. At this point, I find some news sites, forum, and some crypto discussion groups on telegram, slack and discord as useful resources.
