The New South Wales government (NSW) in Australia is turning to blockchain technology to implement the government's driver's license digitization program.

In a statement on August 20, the NSW government said it would conduct a test on 140'000 car owners in the state, prior to the official deployment of the network in 2019. Secure Logic, an Australian IT firm and technology partner for the project, said on Monday that "the blockchain platform will support the distributed data protection initiative."

Named TrustGrid, the blockchain network has already passed preliminary tests conducted in Dubbo last year. The purpose of this program is to use a distributed network to authenticate and store driver's license data so that users can submit their digital credentials through a mobile app. Thus, car owners no longer have to have physical documents to prove their age and identity when they are checked by the police.

The initiative follows a bill passed in may that provided an opportunity to test government projects that are aimed at" allowing residents to use documents in digital form, for example, through blockchain networks, " the local media publication notes.

The new system is consistent with the General purposes of the country on implementation of technology and blockchain technology a distributed registry in the framework of the Digital Economy. Currently, the Australian Federal Agency specializing in research is also working with IBM on the creation of a "National blockchain", which aims to allow companies to carry out transactions on the basis of legally recognized smart contracts.
