Masternodes strategy for new projects

I am sure there are many who know, what is masernosdes, and masternodes is one strategy to introduce projects to investors, usually when the project has done masternodes, they will not do ICO, for example like dashcoin, pivx coin and the latest is dogecash and smartfox coin.
but do you think it's really effective to do so that the project is successful? or can there possibly be a HYPE project and finally a scam?
