I remember when ETH was first announced.. It was a guaranteed goldmine. The tech, the team, all top notch, a No brainer investment.

Fast forward to 2018, are there any new upcoming coins that will be on that level or close to it?

At the moment, we can't really say about a coin taking over from ethereum or being the next ethereum. The technology and smart contract platform provision for other tokens is what makes ethereum stands out and different. There is no coin that can offer that yet but probably in the future, a coin might emerge which will be close enough to be the next ethereum or surpass it. However, the closest coins at this moment to ethereum is Neo and waves in my opinion.
