International blockchain venture studio Blocktech has partnered with the French University of Armenia (UFAR) to launch the first academic Blockchain Laboratory in the country. The partnership cements the New York-based blockchain technologies firm’s footprint in Armenia.
In a statement, the company said the laboratory would introduce interdisciplinary research into the economic implications of distributed ledger technology (DLT) in cooperation with UFAR’s departments of Finance and Law, including the newly established Department of Informatics and Applied Mathematics.
"The rise of blockchain has ushered in an entirely new ecosystem of commoditized trust," said Nick Spanos, the CEO of Blocktech. "Cryptoeconomics is the umbrella field through which we study human behavior and systems design in our new decentralized world. UFAR is the perfect partner for tackling this vital area of research,” he added.
In 2013, Spanos established the Bitcoin Center in New York City, the world’s first live digital currency trading floor which was featured in the Netflix documentary titled Banking on Bitcoin.
The research lab will also feature topics relating to blockchain application architectures, bonding curves, smart contract development, token-curated registries, curation, and oracle services via the Zap platform, including the virtual currency economic design patterns.
Kristina Sargsyan, Ph.D., of UFAR’s Program Director for Industry Partnership and a faculty member of the Department of Informatics and Applied Mathematics commented on the partnership:
"Technology is a major priority for the French University of Armenia heading into the next decade. We are honored to partner with Blocktech given Nick Spanos's pioneering work in the blockchain industry, and we are confident that this will expand opportunities for our students tremendously."
The partnership between Blocktech and UFAR will allow students to enroll in cryptocurrency and blockchain courses, including those on business and technical angles, while being mentored by industry experts participating in the development of real-world projects.
Only last week, blockchain-enabled healthcare startup MediXserve also teamed up with Ateneo de Manila University to launch the Philippines’ first blockchain education and research laboratory.
AMBERLab (Ateneo-MedixServe Blockchain Education and Research Laboratory) is seen to serve as a think-tank and advanced research center that studies blockchain technology for developing countries and initiatives in the private sector.
